Michelle Egan is the 2015 recipient of the Larry Neal Prize for Excellence in EU Studies, for her book "Single Markets: Economic Integration in Europe and the United States" published by Oxford University Press. The Larry Neal Prize was initiated in honor of Professor Emeritus of Economics Larry Neal, the founding director of the European Union Center at the University of Illinois, to recognize excellent research conducted by affiliated faculty of the EU Centers located throughout the United States and Canada.

The Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed for early-career academics in all areas of the sciences, arts, humanities or social sciences. The fellowships support research or teaching/research activity and offer scholars the opportunity to cultivate strong ties to their European collaborators and host institutions. ACDIS Student Assistantships

ACDIS Academic Year 2016/17 & 2017/18 Student Assistants Announcement

Support for two graduate students and one undergraduate student is being offered through the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) in conjunction with Illinois International Programs and a grant from the National Science Foundation. The graduate student support is at 50% time for four fall/spring semesters and two intervening summer months. The undergraduate support is for eight hours per week for 14 weeks in four fall/spring semesters and for 30–40 hours per week for eight weeks in the intervening summer. The focus areas offered are:

  1. Climate change economics and politics
  2. Nuclear materials (spent nuclear fuel management or nuclear materials security)
  3. Social dimensions of information security (motivations for misuse and/or public policy)

Selected students will conduct research, help organize relevant campus events and website materials and a summer short course, and develop course materials and/or be teaching assistants for courses pertinent to a proposed new Graduate Certificate and Masters Degree Concentration in Technology and Security.

Applicants for selection should submit to Kathy Anderson-Conner, with a copy to, an unofficial transcript, and a research plan or statement of areas of potential interest for research. Applicants who have at least 12 semester hours of credit from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 for their UIUC courses. For help with preparing an application, contact ACDIS Director Clifford Singer. Early application is advised, as applications will be reviewed in the order submitted and awards no longer made if and when suitable applicants for all of the positions have been chosen.

For graduate students, a recommendation from a faculty member in their home department should be included with the application. That faculty member must indicate a willingness either to serve as a reader on a Masters thesis in one of the above research areas or have the some of the results of research carried out through May of 2018 be incorporated in to a PhD thesis that the faculty member supervises. The faculty recommendation should note what, if any, additional means of support might be available to the applicant from 16 August 2016 through 15 May 2018.

An undergraduate application must either present a course plan that leads to graduation in May of 2018, or completion of at least 120 credit hours by then with a plan to graduate not later than December of 2018. The name of a faculty member who would be willing to provide a recommendation on request can be included in an undergraduate’s application. However, undergraduate applicants should not delay submitting an application if they do not get a prompt reply from a faculty member willing to be listed as a reference, since this can be requested later during the selection process if needed.

PS 457 / 589 Democratic Governance in Global Setting. Examination of the basic concepts and politics associated with the emergence of a global society. Students evaluate competing explanations for the emergence of this new politics and how and why the global society governs itself. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of the nation-state, markets, and democratization as responses, respectively, to the imperatives or order, welfare, and legitimacy in the governance of world's peoples and states.

LIS 490 SMU/SMG Social Media & Global Change 
This course covers the impact of global and national computer networks on politics, culture, and social relations during a time of upheaval and revolutionary change. Topics may include the new social media, the politics and culture of the internet, hacktivism, cyber warfare, and mobile telephony and their role in the formation, dissemination, manipulation, and suppression of public opinion in Russia/Eurasia, the China/Pacific region, Central/South America, as well as Africa, Iran, and the Middle East.

GRKM 201 Elementary Modern Greek I. This course aims to develop elementary proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course will familiarize beginning students with the Greek alphabet and Modern Greek pronunciation rules, as well as basic morphology and syntax, with an emphasis on listening comprehension and reading skills, as well as basic conversational skills. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required.

GRKM 403 Intermediate Modern Greek I. This course aims to strengthen the concepts learned at the basic level and to introduce students to more complex structures of the Greek language. Specifically it aims to develop intermediate-level proficiency in spoken and written Modern Greek, as well as to introduce elements of cultural knowledge. The course will familiarize students with more complex morphology, syntax, and vocabulary in Modern Greek, with an emphasis on listening comprehension and reading skills, as well as conversational skills. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required.

GRKM 453 Advanced Modern Greek I. This course aims to enable students to attain conversational fluency and to become independent users of the language who deal effectively and with a good deal of accuracy with familiar communication situations. Online language laboratory and Internet assignments required. Prerequisite: GRKM 404 or consent of instructor.

SLCL 200 Partnership in Crisis: Greece, the EU and the Refugee Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean. For nearly seven years the international media have been gripped by the “Greek crisis”.  As the crisis intensified mass protests in Athens and other major Greek cities have caught the world’s attention. Meanwhile what began as a localized fiscal deficit problem grew into a widespread crisis of epic proportions that challenged the political and social fabric of the Greek nation and at times seemed destined to undermine the very existence of a global currency, the Euro. This eight-week course aims to explore the lengthy crisis that has beset Greece and the wider Eurozone. Is it a purely economic phenomenon or something wider and deeper, as many Greeks would suggest? Are its causes to be found in the prevailing international financial environment or in the economic and political system that has evolved in Greece since the early 1970s? To what extent have choices made by both domestic and international actors, such as the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, assisted or exacerbated the crisis? What has been the impact of the crisis on the daily lives of the country’s residents—and what is this impact of the Greek crisis on the rest of the world? How has the recent refugee and migration waves from the Middle East affected Greece’s economic problems and the country’s relations with the EU?
