FROM THE PRESIDENT

When I think of August, my mind immediately thinks "back-to-school" and summer coming to an end. It was a very exciting time when I was a kid. I was able to see my friends again, I was assigned different teachers and classrooms, and couldn’t wait to wear my brand-new school clothes and break out the latest state-of-the-art school supplies. Even though summer fun was ending, everything seemed fresh and exciting! Well, here we are, August – a new school year – a new beginning – lots of changes – a fresh and exciting time!

As we welcome a new Chancellor, new deans, new students and open new dorms, we feel energized with all the excitement of what this year will bring. The Secretariat is not exempt from those changes, we have new members, new committees, a new board, and more changes will come along the way. We are excited to have so many people be a part of those changes and encourage fresh, new ideas from our members so that we can grow and continually become a better resource for our members.

Last month, we couldn’t help but celebrate the summer fun. Equipped with sand pails, shells and a beach ball, we embraced the excitement of summer and thoughts of the beach while laughing, getting to know each other and learning more about all of our wonderful committees. I hope those of you that attended were inspired to join one those committees. For those not able to attend, I encourage you to contact me or any committee member to learn more about the committees that interest you! It’s a great way to meet new people and interact on a more intimate level. Most committees only meet a few times a year, so the time commitment is not overwhelming, but it’s a great opportunity if you’re looking to add to your portfolio!

With the beginning of a new academic year, many of us may have set goals for ourselves to learn more, achieve more, and do more. We are here to help with that! The networking opportunities abound and the speakers are tremendous, including September’s presenter John Wright, a highly sought after national speaker from Greyfield Legacies. ‘John brings to the podium a tremendous sense of energy. He has audiences laughing and crying at the same time and challenges them to be “IN” not “AT” the game. He guarantees to deliver life changing ideas and more importantly, the tools to follow through with them.’ Normally, a talk of this magnitude would be upwards of $200; however, thanks to Deb Flessner, our resourceful, ingenious Programs Chair, he is speaking to us for FREE! Just another example of how great our members are and the knowledge we possess that can be shared with each other.

The August luncheon will feature Laura Barnett, Assistant Director of University Payroll and Benefits (UPB) Training with OBFS.  Laura will explain the UPB Training Initiative Project. I’m sure this presentation will be very insightful for everyone! Lastly, I would like to congratulate Anne Price, winner of the July Riddle! Anne won a gift certificate for a free oil change/ tire rotation from Champaign Chrysler – you know, for all that summer fun travel! I say “July” riddle because there will be another one next month with another prize! Don’t miss out on the “back-to-school” excitement at the August luncheon and be sure to bring your fresh and exciting ideas!

SOCIAL EVENTS

Welcome to August and the start of another school year! The Social Events Committee has been hard at work putting together a schedule of events where members can enjoy time together during lunch hours and after work.  We know people lead busy lives, but we do hope some of the events line up with free time on your schedules so you can join in on some of the events planned during the next 12 months.   These will also be great opportunities for members to invite a guest to join them and learn more about Secretariat and its members.

Lunch Hour Tours These were very popular in the past and are excellent ways for newer members of the Illinois community to become familiar with locations around campus.  The goal is to schedule a couple tours during the next few months before the winter weather returns to Champaign-Urbana.

After Work Gatherings Catching up with co-workers can be hard when you work on a campus this large.  One of the goals of the Social Events Committee is to coordinate a regular meeting place after work where Secretariat members can get together.  This month, plan to meet on August 25 at Houlihan’s on First Street, south of State Farm Center.  During summer months, their patio is a relaxing place on Thursday evenings with live music and specials on food and drinks.  If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can be sure to reserve enough space for the group.

Walking & Running Group - We noticed during the July luncheon that there are several members who walk or run in their free time.  If you happen to be interested in walking or running with others, send me an email indicating your interest in running and/or walking and how far you typically go when you do run or walk.  In the coming weeks, our committee will put together some ideas on where and when to meet as a group for long and short run/walks.

Suggestions and Ideas - Do you know of some place on campus or in the surrounding community that would be interesting for Secretariat members to visit?  Send us a note and tell us! We welcome ideas, suggestions and feedback.

Sincerely,

Andréa Fain
