SEPTEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Happy September! I hope everyone’s semester is off to a great start. There’s so much energy in the air with the return of students and faculty to campus. As we welcome new students, faculty and staff to campus, I would also like to welcome all of our new Secretariat Members - 18 new members already this year! If you see any of these people, please give them a warm welcome: Pamela Wakefield, Theresa Harris, Rebecca Vance, Sheree Denham, Mary White, Janette Bradley Wright, Shanitera Walker, Cathy Keltz, Keri Frederick, Andrea Stark, Linda Meccoli, Tracie Hediger, Lauri Quick, Amber Holmes, Karla Denzler, Laura Ketchum, Penny Ames, and Andrea Semiche.
The 2015-2016 Annual Report has been completed! Under Andréa Fain’s leadership for AY16 we accomplished quite a bit and only spent $20 more than the total revenue for the year. To read about all of our wonderful accomplishments, please check out the report on our website.
We are still seeking persons interested in joining various committees. At the last board meeting, the Executive Committee voted to establish a Website Committee. This committee will be responsible for updating the current website. The committee has been charged to determine if the current website is meeting the members’ needs, or if a new format would be more beneficial. This committee will also work closely with the Social Media Committee. If you are interested or have suggestions, please contact Angie Wisehart (email@example.com). I encourage you to contact me or any committee member to learn more about any of the committees that interest you! It’s a great way to meet new people and interact on a more intimate level. Most committees only meet a few times a year, so the time commitment is not overwhelming, but it’s a great opportunity if you’re looking to add to your portfolio!
Don’t forget to sign up for the September Luncheon. The presenter will be an excellent one! John Wright, a highly sought after national speaker from Greyfield Legacies will be here. ‘John brings to the podium a tremendous sense of energy. He has audiences laughing and crying at the same time and challenges them to be “IN” not “AT” the game. He guarantees to deliver life changing ideas and more importantly, the tools to follow through with them.’ October will be our “Boss of the Year” (BOTY) and Bosses Recognition Luncheon. Be sure to nominate your boss for all the good work they do! See the BOTY section for more details.
Last month, Laura Barnett, Assistant Director of University Payroll and Benefits (UPB) Training with OBFS explained the UPB Training Initiative Project. UPB is currently seeking “Learning Partners” to provide input and feedback for one or more training topics. If you are interested, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. More information can be found on their website.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate Lezli Cline, winner of the August Riddle! Lezli won a “back-to-school goodie bag! What’s big and yellow and brightens every mom’s morning? A School Bus! We had a great time hearing all the silly answers that were submitted: the sun, a sunflower, an egg yolk, the Jimmy Dean’s Guy, & Big Bird. I would also like to congratulate all of the individuals from our campus who will be participating in the 2016 U.S. Paralympics this month in Rio de Janeiro. Good Luck!

The social Committee’s focus for the 2016-2017 year is to provide opportunities for the Secretariat members where they can interact with one another. The committee is coordinating after work events, tour of campus locations and other group gatherings that may be of interest to multiple member. We also welcome members and their guests attending the monthly luncheons. If you are attending one of these for the first time, Debbie and I are there to meet you and can answer questions you may have about The Secretariat. We enjoy meeting new people – so come join us at the luncheon or one of our upcoming events!
After 5:00 Plans - Make plans to meet your Secretariat colleagues and their guests after work at Houlihan’s on Thursday, September 15. During summer months, their patio is a relaxing place to unwind. On Thursday evenings, there is live music and half-price specials on select food and drinks. Houlihan’s is located at the I Hotel on South First Street, across the street from the State Farm Center. If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can reserve enough space for the entire group.
Walking & Running Group - We noticed during the July luncheon that there are several members who walk or run in their free time. If you happen to be interested in walking or running with others, send me an email indicating your interest in running and/or walking and how far you typically go when you do run or walk. We are putting together some ideas on where and when to meet as a group for long and short run/walks.
Suggestions and Ideas - Do you know of some place on campus or in the surrounding community that would be interesting for Secretariat members to visit? Have an idea for a fun lunch hour or evening event? Send us a note and tell us! We welcome ideas, suggestions and feedback.
Looking forward, our committee hopes to continue and expand our member usage and to provide information and entertainment. Feel free to send any of us your contributions for the various Social Media platforms available to us:

At the August meeting, the Executive Board agreed to establish a Website Committee. The Committee will be responsible for updating the current website. The committee has been charged to determine if the current website is meeting the members’ needs, or if a new format would be more beneficial. This committee will also work closely with the Social Media Committee.
If you have experience with websites, anywhere from the behind-the-scenes technological aspect to web design to just updating existing information, please consider joining this committee! Even if you don’t, but this sounds like something that you may be interested in to expand your office skills please still consider joining! All input will be needed and welcomed for this important committee! We will be mindful of busy schedules and try to conduct most business by email.
Please contact President Nigh, Angie Wisehart, Michael Foellmer, or Lezli Cline if you are interested in joining, have suggestions, or would like more information.
