Happy Holidays!

I cannot believe that it’s December already and the holidays are upon us once again! This time of year brings so much joy to many, yet so much pain to others who may not be around family or friends or have the means to celebrate. One example, is the family the Secretariat has “adopted” to make this season extra special, an Aunt who’s raising her three young nieces and nephew. I hope those of us who are able will help bring joy to this family. Please see the details in the Philanthropy section.

The date of the luncheon this month is earlier than usual – December 14th! Please come celebrate the holidays with some great friends, fun and games!

I would like to congratulate Terri Palumbo again on receiving the Bess G. Matteson Award and thank the Executive Board for all their hard work in putting together an excellent presentation!

We are still seeking persons interested in joining various committees. I encourage you to contact me or any committee member to learn more about any of the committees that interest you! It’s a great way to meet new people and interact on a more intimate level. Most committees only meet a few times a year, so the time commitment is not overwhelming but it’s a great opportunity if you’re looking to add to your portfolio!

Terri Palumbo was honored at the 2016 November Secretariat Luncheon.  Terri met the criteria for the Bess Matteson Award and received it from President, Penny Nigh.  Special guests who gave tribute to Terri were Elynne Cole, Associate Provost of Human Resources; Sharon Conatser, Secretariat President from 1996-97; Denice Wells, Secretariat President from 2001-02; Terry Davis, Secretariat President from 2005-06; Rebecca Nash, Secretariat President from 2014-15; and Donna Fry, Secretariat Board Member for many years.

When I first contacted Faculty Staff Assistance Program to see if they had a family for us to adopt as we have done for several years, they had only received one request from a large family. After discussing the situation with the Secretariat Board, we decided that another department that was looking for a large family to help would be a better match. My first thought was, WOW! This is great! The need is less this year.

Before reaching out to another organization, I called FSAP again to see if by chance another request had been made. Their deadline had passed, but they did receive a call just the day before. An aunt was looking for help for her two nieces and one nephew whom she adopted from a “terrible and horrific situation”.  The deadline had passed but, she didn’t know about the program, could she be added to the list next year?  

Well, one day later I call and it was meant to be! FSAP contacted the family just moments after I called and the aunt was very excited. I reached out to the aunt and she couldn’t believe it. She kept saying, “Thank you!" and "This means so much!”.

The children have blossomed since being with her. Her nephew is in 3rd grade and reading at a 5th grade level and her older niece made Student of the Month. The family is asking for the basics, but with your donations we can provide a joyful Christmas and one that the children will cheer with delight.  Let’s put a twinkle in their eyes!

It was a match meant to be! We are the group, the angels, that can help brighten their Christmas.  Here is the family's information:

Please note deadline is Thursday, December 15, as I am off on Friday, December 16. I will shop that weekend and will meet the aunt the following week to bring her “Christmas”.

The Secretariat, what a wonderful organization to be part of! 68 years of existence. Wow! Could experience gained as an elected officer in The Secretariat and thus a member of the Executive Board, help advance your skill set to the next level? Is it time for you to give back to The Secretariat? The Nomination/Elections Committee will make a formal request for nominations beginning in January and running through the end of March. Please put together a list of whom you would like to serve in our leadership roles for The Secretariat. Please consider nominating yourself, as well!
