Notes from the Head

As I peruse the Chronicles of Higher Education, and read about the troubles facing other colleges and universities around the country, I am immensely proud of our great university. This is the essence of a message I sent recently to Chancellor Jones, thanking him for his leadership. But you should also be very proud of your contributions to the success of the semester thus far! You have taken precautions, exhibited responsible behavior, and made numerous sacrifices, and for this I thank you (as I’m sure does Chancellor Jones). And now I ask for another personal action, especially as we approach the second half of the semester: Take care of yourself! We recently had discussions in ATMS 571 on wellness, and the students shared some of their wellness activities. These ranged from sunrise runs to Zoom calls with friends. The Graduate College (see https://grad.illinois.edu/gradmap/well-being)  offers other suggestions, including online relaxation exercises, weekly workshops from the Counseling Center (see https://counselingcenter.illinois.edu/node/190), programs at the ARC (the indoor pool is open!), and nature walks at the Japan House and surrounding arboretum as well as at Allerton. Finally, echoing Chancellor Jones’ recent request, I encourage you to get a flu shot (https://www.mckinley.illinois.edu/fluclinic ). Have a great October, and be well!

- Jeff Trapp, Head of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences
