Happy New Year to you all!

I hope that you were able to spend time relaxing with friends and family during the holiday break. It was so wonderful to have the three additional gift days provided to us! I certainly appreciated the gesture from our administrators during these tough budget times. It made the break just that more enjoyable.

Regrettably, I am writing to you in President Nigh’s absence. Penny’s grandfather passed away just recently and she is away on personal leave. Ralph Lieb’s visitation is Thursday, January 5. With Executive Board approval, a plant will be delivered to Mr. Lieb’s visitation on behalf of The Secretariat.

I hope you are able to make it to the January luncheon. The Social Committee and Programs/ Reservations Committee worked together to schedule a “behind the scenes” tour and overview at the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion. The tour and overview will showcase how exhibits are prepared, framed and stored. Come join us to learn more about the second largest general fine art museum in the state of Illinois and how they manage to house the University of Illinois art collection. More details can be found below under Programs/Reservations.

The Social Committee has also planned a get-together after work on January 11 at Baxter’s American Grille. It’s always a good time to get together with our fellow Secretariat members in an informal setting to learn more about each other and just relax, laugh and have a genuinely good time. Please consider joining us!

As you will see below, the Nominations/Elections Committee is officially seeking nominations for Elected Officers. If you know someone that you would like to see in one of these roles, or if you would like to fulfill one of these roles yourself, please do not hesitate to nominate. This is a great way to continue to improve and move The Secretariat forward, while learning/improving personal leadership skills. I know that we have many members that can easily fulfill these positions!

It truly fills my heart to see so much kindness from our members during the holidays. The Philanthropy Committee was once again able to provide a wonderful Christmas to a family in need. They would not have been able to do it without YOUR help and for that I thank you!! Please see the committee’s wonderful report below.

If you have questions or feedback for The Secretariat please do not hesitate to contact any of the Elected Officers or Committee Chairs. You may also send an email to: We always want to know what we can do for you.

A special THANK YOU for all of the contributions for our adopted family. We were able to provide a very special Christmas for the family.  I met the Aunt and the kids on Thursday, December 22. As I pulled out the bags for the children, she couldn’t believe all that we purchased. I was eager to show her some of the goodies, the remote control car for her nephew, the crafts for the oldest girl and the Lego princess house for the youngest girl.  Each received Lego sets, sleepwear, blanket, books, hats, gloves, and extra cars for the boy, Barbies for the girls, artist set for the oldest and gift card for boots. A generous donated JC Penny gift card had the Aunt smile with delight.  New coats for sure and with the sales, additional treats. For the Aunt, a bag with a red, soft, fluffy robe and red sweater and top. She said, ”I didn’t need anything.", but was quick to add, "How did you know?” Games for the family and Walmart gift cards to shop with.  They were ready for Santa and a long winter break.

I appreciate all of your help! No family should do without and it always amazes me how The Secretariat members step up and makes sure our adopted family is taken care of. You are the Angels!

I wish you and  your family a blessed and Happy New Year!

All the best,

A special note from the Aunt - ”The kids loved all of their gifts, especially the car, it is amazing. I went and purchased some nice coats and boots and was able to get them some Nike gym shoes. Everything was so wonderful! The kids were very happy and enjoyed everything. I appreciate everything The Secretariat gave the children for Christmas. Thank everyone for me! Also, everything fits, and I love my robe, sweater, and shirt.”

“All gifts were greatly appreciated, and most important the kids were very happy and they enjoyed all their gifts. This was a blessing for us and we appreciate everything. Thank you so MUCH!!!”

A note received from FSAP - Please accept our deep appreciation for your participation in the Holiday Families program this holiday season. The generosity of The Secretariat will help make Christmas very special for your sponsored family. Please pass along our warmest thanks to all who participated. Happy Holidays!

2016 was a great year in which to be a member of The Secretariat. Here’s to a bright start for an equally successful year, with resolutions for more networking, more learning, enjoyment, and involvement with our group’s social media!

We are always open to suggestions and ideas on how we can better serve you through social media, and welcome your contributions.

The Social Committee is pleased to announce with the Programs and Reservation Committee that this month’s luncheon will be held at the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion, 500 E. Peabody Drive.  We expect Design and Installation Specialist Walter Wilson to give a brief overview of how exhibits are prepared while we are in the galleries before going ‘behind the scenes’ to see some of the areas where items are prepared, framed and stored.  Don’t wait, RSVP today for this month’s luncheon.  Details for this month’s luncheon and tour are listed in the Programs and Reservation Committee section.

After 5:00 p.m. PlansPlan to brave the winter weather and meet other Secretariat members and guests on Wednesday, January 11 at Baxter’s at 100 Trade Center Drive in Champaign (near McDonald’s on South Neil).  Appetizers are half-price on Wednesdays and there is usually live music during their weekly happy hours.  If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to so we can reserve enough space for the entire group. Ask the host/hostess for the Secretariat group.

The Secretariat has 144 total members with about 100 members who are eligible to serve in an officer role. Many of you have taken the time to forge this great organization in its current direction. Each member has a quality that could help make it even stronger.  Perhaps this is why you joined The Secretariat.

The Nomination/Elections Committee is announcing a formal request for nominations of Officers for the 2017-2018 election year beginning now (January) and running through March 24th 2016. So, please put together a list of whom you would like to serve in leadership roles for The Secretariat. Please consider nominating yourself as well! Over the next couple of months, I will introduce one of the three positions for which you could nominate YOURSELF or another person of trust. I will start with The Treasurer:

The Treasurer

  • Will assure sound financial management and accountability of resources.
  • Will project an annual budget for approval at the July Executive Board Meeting.
  • Will deposit all receipts of this Association, and will make disbursements by University voucher. Expenditures not included in the annual budget approved each July will require presentation to and approval by the Executive Board prior to commitment.
  • Will keep an account of all receipts and disbursements, making monthly reports to the Executive Board and an annual written report by June 30 of the current term.
  • Will deposit the funds of this Association in accordance with Guidelines issued by University of Illinois Registered Organization Office.
  • At the end of the elected term, will transfer the current records to the successor and will forward prior year's records to President to be archived.

Please remember you are not alone when taking on your role as an officer. The Secretariat has a strong member base and you will be, at most, an email away from help with any challenges that arise.
