 Happy March!

The Secretariat is here to help you be prepared for those opportunities that come your way! Whether it’s the connections and friendships you make attending meetings, listening to one of our motivating and encouraging speakers, or expanding your portfolio by serving on one of our outstanding committees; no matter how you choose to participate in the Secretariat, one thing is for certain – we are definitely lucky to have you!

The Membership Committee recently announced the membership prices for the rest of the year have been reduced.  Is there anyone who know that is interested in joining Secretariat, but has not yet done so?  Share this newsletter with them and point out that membership fees for new members have been reduced to $7.50. The year may be half over, but we still have a lot to offer. Share and encourage your colleagues to join us!

The Nominations and Elections Committee are geared up to take nominations for next year’s officers. Please consider making a nomination of someone who you feel would benefit the Secretariat in our mission and/or nominate yourself. This is a great way to be more involved and continue to learn and grow in your position. If you have any questions about serving as an officer, feel free to contact me or anyone on the committee.

The Programs and Reservations Committee hosted a great program last month. For those of you who couldn’t attend, two of our Paralympic athletes, Amanda and Brian, gave a very dynamic talk about participating in Rio de Janeiro this past fall, how they began their athletic careers and how it feels to win a medal! They were both very entertaining and we learned a lot.

This month, Robbie Witt, AHR Deputy Director, will speak to us about HR related topics such as, classifications, upgrades, Civil Service changes, etc. Robbie is an excellent speaker and has a wealth of knowledge regarding staff policies, so come get all your questions answered!

We are still seeking persons interested in joining various committees. I encourage you to contact me or any committee member to learn more about any of the committees that interest you! It’s a great way to meet new people and interact on a more intimate level. Most committees only meet a few times a year, so the time commitment is not overwhelming but it’s a great opportunity if you’re looking to add to your portfolio!

SOCIAL EVENTS

After 5:00 p.m. PlansThis month, our group will head downtown and meet at Seven Saints, 32 E. Chester Street, on Tuesday, March 21.  They have an excellent food menu with plenty of appetizer selections: Bavarian Pretzels, Cheese Curds, Crab Cakes.  Come join us for an hour to relax and connect with colleagues from across campus.  If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can reserve enough space for the entire group. Ask the host/hostess for the Secretariat group.

 NOMINATIONS/ELECTIONS

The Nomination/Elections Committee has announced a formal request for nominations of Officers beginning in January and running through March 24th, 2017 for the 2017-2018 election year. So please put together a list of whom you would like to see serve in leadership roles for The Secretariat. Please consider nominating yourself as well! Over the last couple of months, we introduced two of the three positions for which you could nominate YOURSELF or another person of trust. In January we started with the Treasurer position. In February, we will outlined the Recording Secretary.  Now in March, we will outline the President Elect.

The President Elect:

The Secretariat By-Laws, Article X.  Responsibilities of Elected Officers:

Section 2.  The President Elect – Will assume office of the President following term as President Elect.  Will preside in the absence of the President and will perform other duties as ordinarily pertain to this office.  Will assist the President in preparing Executive Board agendas and follow up on items raised at board and general membership meetings.  If possible, will be liaison to Staff Advisory Council representing The Secretariat.

Section 1.  The President – Will preside at all meetings of this Association and of its elected officers, and will perform such other duties as ordinarily pertain to this office.  Will appoint all chairs deemed necessary for carrying out the purpose of this Association, subject to approval of the elected officers and will be an ex-officio member of all committees, except Nomination and Election Committee.  The President will collect reports form all Executive Board members and compile the information for distribution as an annual report to the membership no later than June 30 of the current term.  At the end of the current term, the President will transfer current presidential records to and forward prior year’s records with materials to archives.

Please remember you are not alone when taking on your role as an officer. The Secretariat has a strong member base and you will be, at most, an email away from help with any challenges that arise.

PRESIDENT-ELECT ANNOUNCEMENT

The University of Illinois kicked off the Sesquicentennial Celebration on February 28. It was on this date in 1867 that the land-grant institution was established. Year-long activities have been scheduled to celebrate 150 years of accomplishments in addition to looking forward to the future. Visit http://150.illinois.edu/about.html to learn more.
