In 2015, electricity generated by hydropower accounted for more than 85 percent of global renewable electricity generation. Irrigation has similar global importance: while the sector accounts for only 28 percent of global harvested area, irrigated agriculture produces 40 percent of our food. Researchers are studying current relationships between hydropower and irrigation in a global context.  READ MORE


A recently completed project sponsored by IDOT and conducted by the Illinois Center for Transportation investigated the effectiveness of sensor network systems for detecting traffic jams or stopped traffic, estimating travel times and delays for motorists, and estimating speed of vehicles in and approaching roadway work zones. Associate Professor Larry Fahnestock has received one of the 2017 Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Research. The award is presented annually to the assistant professors and associate professors who have been judged by their colleagues to have conducted the best research during the previous academic years. CEE at Illinois senior Lama Aoudi has been named a 2017 Knight of St. Patrick by the College of Engineering. One of the highest honors an engineering student can receive, the award is given to students who demonstrate leadership, excellence in character, and outstanding contribution to the college and its students.
