UIUC featured in Celebratio Mathematica series

 
 

Several distiguished members of the Department of Mathematics were featured in a five-volume series of Celebratio Mathematica, an open-access scholarly web publication by Mathematical Sciences Publishers that celebrates mathematics and related fields, and their people. Four of the five volumes in the series are published online and feature Kenneth AppelDonald BurkholderJoseph Doob, and Wolfgang Haken.

Fall 2021 COVID-19 Update

Throughout the summer, the university provided protocol reminders and updates regarding vaccine/testing requirements, face coverings, and more for Fall 2021; the latest update, which addressed booster vaccine info and close contact protocols for employees, was sent out earlier this week.

Inaugural Blackwell Summer Scholars Program held virtually this summer

Cohosted by the UIUC Departments of Statistics and Mathematics, the David H. Blackwell Summer Scholars Program concluded its inaugural session with 14 scholars presenting their culminating research on a wide variety of topics.

Fall 2021 update

The department is excited to welcome new students to our graduate program. This fall, we have 21 new PhD students and 45 new students in our MS programs.

Thank you to everyone who assisted with Graduate Student Orientation! While many orientation events were moved to zoom due to COVID precautions, new students were able to meet one another for a department tour, outdoor box lunches, and practice teaching.

The AWM graduate chapter has organized a Saturday potluck picnic where new and continuing graduate students can meet one another before the start of the semester.

Math Library Hours

Summer Interim 2021 Hours (Aug. 9–22)
Beginning Monday, Aug. 9, 2021, the Math Library continues to be open for all library services during the following walk-in hours: Monday through Thursday, 1–5 p.m. Pre-appointments are not required.

Reduced Fall 2021 Hours (Aug. 23–Sept. 19)
Beginning Monday, Aug. 23, to Sunday, Sept. 19, the Math Library will be open for all library services during the following reduced walk-in hours:

  • Monday through Friday: 9 a.m.– 5 p.m.
  • Saturday/Sundays: closed 

Regular Fall 2021 Hours (Starting Sept. 20, 2021)
To be announced in September.

Per campus guidelines, as of July 30, 2021, all faculty, students, staff, and visitors are required to wear a face covering inside all University of Illinois facilities.

If you have any questions, please email us at math@library.illinois.edu. All Math Library staff and librarians are working during regular business hours and are happy to help with your reference and access needs.

 
 
New Math Library Books

While the Math Library facility was unavailable to the public during the recent pandemic-related closings, we continued to acquire books for our distinct collections of mathematics and statistics materials. A list of all new books received at the Math Library during the pandemic is available to download.

Karl Norton (PhD ’66) has published his novel, "Betrayal 101: A College Saga," a book about a young mathematician's college teaching career that he says is loosely based on his own experience.

Ellacombe Chimes Bicentennial Celebration

Earlier this summer, the Altgeld chimesplayers participated in the worldwide Ellacombe Chimes Bicentennial Celebration. The online celebration honored the 200th anniversary of Rev. Henry Thomas Ellacombe’s invention of a mechanism that allowed a single person to ring a set of tower bells.
