Why You Should Take a Class in the College of Education … Even If You’re Not Majoring in It!

Life-Changing Experience Abroad
For most of her time in high school, Patricia Marek was clueless about what career she wanted to pursue prior to college. The summer before her senior year, however, she participated in a study and service trip to the Dominican Republic, and everything changed. While overseas, Patricia volunteered at an orphanage for children with severe disabilities, meeting an 8-year-old named Elizabeth. "Every day when she saw me," Patricia said, "she would run up to me with the biggest smile in the world. It was hard leaving her behind because there was so little I could do in a span of three weeks." Rest assured, though, Patricia's experience will lead to positive lasting effects on many other children with disabilities since the freshman is majoring in special education. "Working with these kids, especially Elizabeth, gave me so much happiness and satisfaction," she said.
