Happy Summer!

Another academic year comes to an end and so will my term as President of the Secretariat. I have been truly humbled to serve as your President this year. The Secretariat is such a highly respected and well-known organization and has really helped me developed new skills and improve on old ones. And - the best part is - getting to know all of you and building a network of friends! I hope you have all enjoyed the monthly luncheons, social gatherings, special events and have started to build a network of your own.

I encourage you to consider joining a committee in the upcoming year. Please contact me or any committee member to learn more about any of the committees that interest you! It’s a great way to meet new people and interact on a more intimate level. Most committees only meet a few times a year, so the time commitment is not overwhelming but it’s a great opportunity if you’re looking to add to your portfolio!

I hope that you have enjoyed your Secretariat membership this year! The Secretariat Board is always looking ahead and working to enhance what is presented to the membership.  I am pleased to announce that, at the May Business Meeting, the Secretariat membership passed several bylaw changes that will take effect with the new fiscal year in July. I believe these changes will enhance your experience with the Secretariat and increase your professional development opportunities. Please continue to share your thoughts and ideas with the board.  The Secretariat depends on all of our members for continued growth!

IT IS TIME TO RENEW!

If you renew your membership now or join The Secretariat now, your membership will be good through the end of fiscal year 2018! We offer so many great opportunities to improve your leadership skills, advance your career, and connect with other office professionals across campus. Remind your friends and colleagues to join and please invite any NEW STAFF in your office to be a guest at an upcoming luncheon so they can see for themselves what we have to offer.

Please remember to let the membership committee know if you are planning to retire soon so that you can be a Secretariat retiree member! BY-LAWS / PARLIAMENTARIAN

Proposed bylaws revisions were distributed to the membership via email on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.  Those revisions were read and approved at the May 17, 2017 Secretariat General Luncheon meeting. The approved changes to existing committees will be effective with the membership year beginning July 1, 2017.

Welcome Summer, and the newly updated Secretariat website! Continuing the rejuvenation process, we will be streamlining the committee list for The Secretariat, combining several of the special committees into the Communications Committee, of which Social Media will be one component. Please continue to monitor our posts, and provide feedback to help us provide useful, informative (and fun) content.

SOCIAL EVENTS

After 5:00 p.m. PlansWarmer weather is here and we can enjoy our evenings on the patios again! Mark your calendar and head to Houlihan’s on Thursday, June 15. Their patio is the place to visit Thursday evenings during the summer months. There will be live music and food/drink specials offered.  If the weather is pleasant, we will be sitting outside. Come join us for an hour to relax and connect with colleagues from across campus.  If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can reserve enough space for the entire group. Ask the host/hostess for the Secretariat group.

Add Riggs Beer Company (1901 S. High Cross Road, Urbana) as the place to be after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 29. This is the first day of their 1-year anniversary festival, Riggs Fest. Live music will be performed by Love Sign, a popular local band. Their food truck calendar shows Sidney Dairy Barn, Fernando’s, Pauly’s BBQ and Piato to Go as being on site and ready to serve delicious food. More information on Riggs and specifically their weekend-long events to celebrate their first year can be found on their page, http://www.riggsbeer.com/index.php/event/riggs-fest/2017-06-29/. Depending on the weather and space, we will either sit outside or be indoors. Otherwise, send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can know who to expect and how much seating to reserve. This is sure to be a fun evening and a good way to unwind after a long work week!

 NOMINATIONS/ELECTIONS

The Nomination/Elections Committee would like to present The Secretariat Officers for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, elected at the May General Meeting Luncheon.  Congratulations!

President:  Angie Wisehart - Business/Administrative Associate - Prairie Research Institute. Last Year Angie was elected the President-Elect for the 2016-2017 year and will assume the President’s role for 2017-2018.

President-Elect:  Michael Foellmer – Assistant Director, Labor Education Program
