Updates from the YED Committee  |  March 2021

Scholarship

One of the initiatives of the YED is to sustain a scholarship fund in which young alumni can support current students. There are a lot of different reasons and ways people can give back to their alma mater. This month, YED Scholarship Chair Katie Bell shares why she decided to donate to the YED scholarship fund:

"As I advance through my career as a young professional in Chicago, I've realized how many doors my CEE degree from UIUC opened for me. I found my first job by going to a CEE Job Fair in the Newmark Crane Bay, and have made countless connections with UIUC alumni in the industry ever since. I had such an amazing experience at UIUC and I give back because I want to make sure future generations of civil engineers can enjoy the same."

Networking

The Networking Committee would like to call attention to International Women’s Day on March 8.  See below for some resources on how women network differently than men and how to network as a working parent.

The Networking Committee has also worked to help our young alumni adapt to the challenges we've all faced over the past year, especially with the changes to remote working and virtual networking. We are able to successfully host our first virtual happy hour in September. The Networking Committee is working hard to plan exciting virtual events this year. We hope that we are able to return to in-person networking events later in 2021.

Career Development

Join us for a virtual PE Exam Q&A!

April PE Exams are coming up... Do you have questions about the exam? Want to hear from others who've taken (and passed) the PE exam recently and connect with others who are taking it this cycle? The YED Professional Development Committee is organizing a virtual PE Exam Q&A, to be held via Zoom on March 11 at 5pm CST. If you're interested, you can register, submit your questions, and find the meeting link information here: https://forms.gle/G1yagJa96avVcCCV6 We hope to see you there!

Mentoring

Why is mentorship important as a young professional? Why is being a mentor and a mentee important to your growth?

The mentorship experience allows mentees explore new horizons within their field and learn how to manage their career more efficiently towards identifying and achieving their professional goals, handle better work situations and expand their network, perspectives and career options. Being a mentor is a valuable experience where you can make an impact by sharing lessons learned from your professional path and be a source of inspiration. It is a real testament of effective leadership and an opportunity to cultivate your network and self-reflect through having a deeper insight on what you have achieved and what led you to where you are in your career.

We would like to use this opportunity to update all of you that applied to the second round of mentorship. We are currently reviewing all applications and plan to contact you with the next steps in the next few weeks.
