Illinois researchers investigate neuron coding for advances in prosthetics

When we experience a sensory stimulus, such as a baby crying or a bite of pizza, the neurons in our brain fire impulses rapidly to receive and interpret the signal. How these impulses are timed—and how we can replicate it artificially—has been mathematically determined by a team of CSL researchers in the Health Care Engineering Systems Center, and has applications in building advanced prosthetics. Read more.

Winning DAC IoT System

Most university campuses employ security systems to help keep students, faculty, and staff safe. But because of their sheer size – the University of Illinois campus totals 6,370 acres, for example – it’s expensive to provide adequate coverage using traditional systems.

Illinois researchers teamed up with startup Inspirit IoT to develop a promising low-cost solution: an audio-based security system that can alert a central command center when trouble breaks out, such as the sound of a gunshot or screaming. The system, which measures about 10 centimeters in length and can be built for around $20, recently won first place at the IEEE/ACM Design Automation Conference (DAC) 2017 International Hardware Design Contest this summer. Read more.

Homa Alemzadeh, a CSL alumna co-advised by Ravi Iyer and Zbigniew Kalbarczyk, has been awarded the Carter PhD Dissertation Award in Dependability, a prestigious award that is given annually by the IEEE Technical Committee and IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance to one new PhD graduate worldwide who has made significant contribution to the field of dependable computing through her PhD dissertation research. Shannon Chen

Chien-Nan (Shannon) Chen, who received his PhD in computer science at Illinois in 2016, has been awarded the SIGMM Outstanding PhD Thesis Award. The award will be presented at ACM Multimedia 2017 in October 2017.

Advised by CSL Director Klara Nahrstedt, Chen’s thesis is titled “Semantics-Aware Content Delivery Framework for 3D Tele-Immersion.” This work focuses on the advancement of 3D tele-immersion technology, which is an immersive type of virtual reality that allows full-body, multimedia interaction with people at different locations. Chen is now working at Facebook as a research scientist on the 360 media team. Read more.

When a tall, thin robot was introduced to visitors at University of Illinois test plots July 13, it was reminiscent of early “Star Wars” movies, when such robots were science fiction.

Today, TERRA-MEPP is very real. They are expected to be available to seed companies later this year and on a larger scale in 2018. Some companies are already testing them, said Girish Chowdhary, CSL assistant professor and director of the Distributed Autonomous Systems Laboratory, which conducts research in autonomous decision making for robotic systems.
