Creative Commons and Beyond

Three Creative Commons (CC) licenses that are most commonly used in data sharing were introduced in 2019 Data Nudge. However, there are other factors that can affect which license you choose for your research data. In this Nudge, we want to bring these factors to your attention.

1) Why license your research data?

  • To remove uncertainty so others know what can or cannot do with your work.
  • To set conditions/limits on how your data will be re-used.

2) What factors should I consider when choosing a license for research data?

  • Check funder requirements. Funders may recommend a particular license.
  • Check data repository policies. Repositories may only offer certain type of licenses.
  • Check local policies. Institutions or departments may have their own licenses.
  • Check regulations. Regions may have requirements, such as GDPR.
  • Check licenses when publishing data derivatives. Honor the orginal data license.
