Happy back-to-school everyone! I hope that each of you had a great summer! Getting all of our own children back to school, and watching the students return to campus has definitely solidified that summer has come to an end. Even though the calendar may still indicate that it’s summer, I disagree. Although the slower pace on campus during the summer is always welcomed, hearing the students on campus in late August is always refreshing. They bring with them energy that can help us all feel excited to be a part of this wonderful university. The excitement is carrying over to The Secretariat as well with an excellent speaker for the September Career Connections event. Please join us as we listen to Chancellor Robert Jones. He will be introduced by one of our biggest supporters, Elyne Cole, Associate Provost for Human Resources. It truly is an honor to have both of these outstanding administrators at one of our events! I hope that you are able to attend. As always, the registration details can be found below.

If you weren’t able to attend our August Career Connections program you missed a great opportunity to get an overview of the newly implemented Illinois Human Resources website. There is a lot of information that can be found on the website, and Renee Lyell did an excellent job highlighting key points. The presentation was recorded and can be viewed here:

Illinois Human Resources Website Overview.

The presentation will also be posted on The Secretariat website.

You will see below that nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Boss of the Year. Please consider nominating your boss for this wonderful award. Many of them are so supportive of our membership to this organization. Just nominating them is a great way to say “thank you” for the support that they provide.

Are you looking for opportunities to learn how you can grow your leadership skills? LEAD 2017 is a one-day event that will help you do that for a very small fee. Visit for additional details and registration information.

Don’t forget that University of Illinois faculty, students, and staff have free access to  You can find thousands of video tutorials on topics ranging from Microsoft Office to Adobe to web publishing to Google Apps to professional skills development. As you see from my examples, the topics cover everything you need to know and more!

If you have any ideas on how we can help you do your jobs better please reach out to any committee member. All ideas are welcome!

I look forward to seeing you at Career Connections on September 20th!

Social Events

Along with coordinating the monthly Career Connections meetings, the Program and Events Committee also schedules events where Secretariat members can interact with one another in an informal setting. Members and their guests – guests are always welcome! – are encouraged to relax and take a moment to get better acquainted with fellow Secretariat members.

After 5:00 Plans - Make plans to meet your Secretariat colleagues and their guests after work at Houlihan’s on Thursday, September 14.  The patio is a relaxing place to unwind with live music and half-price specials on select food and drinks during the summer months.  Houlihan’s is located at the I Hotel on South First Street, across the street from the State Farm Center.  If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to so we can reserve enough space for the entire group.

Suggestions and Ideas - Do you know of some place on campus or in the surrounding community that would be interesting for Secretariat members to visit?  Have an idea for a fun lunch hour or evening event? Email one of our committee members shown below your ideas and suggestions. We welcome your input and feedback!

Nominations for the 2017 Secretariat Boss of the Year are now being accepted.  The nominator and the nominee must register to attend the October 18, 2017 luncheon, where the winner will be announced.  The speaker at the meeting will be the 2016-17 Boss of the Year recipient Marlah Bonner-McDuffie, Associate Dean for Advancement, College of Media.

Nominations can be made by any current member of The Secretariat to nominate their boss.  Eligible Secretariat members who would like to nominate more than one boss should submit separate nomination forms/letters.  Elected officers of The Secretariat and members of the “Boss of the Year and Office Professional of the Year” committee are excluded from submitting a nomination.  In order to facilitate an unbiased evaluation of each nomination letter, please do not mention your boss or department by name, but instead use a moniker/nickname throughout your letter.  Any references that might identify the candidate will be redacted so the committee can be completely unbiased.  The following guidelines are suggested for the nomination letter:

The nominee should:

  • Perform his/her duties beyond the expected
  • Enthusiastically support the University of Illinois and its programs
  • Routinely show consideration and support of others – staff, colleagues, students and visitors to office/campus
  • Perform courtesies beyond their daily responsibilities
  • Exhibit other qualities that exemplify outstanding leadership and organizational skills

The nominator and the nominee must register for the October 18 luncheon, where the winner will be announced.  In the event of an emergency, such as illness or unforeseen meetings/conference where the nominee or nominator would be unable to attend the luncheon, please contact Colleen Hammel.  Please note:  The “2017 Boss of the Year” award recipient and one nominator will receive complimentary lunches.

Link to the form:

Please submit the nomination form and nomination letter to Colleen Hammel at or via campus mail to the College of Media Office of Advancement, 114 Campbell Hall, 300 N. Goodwin Ave., MC-252 by Friday, September 29, 2017.

Acknowledgement of receipt of the nomination paperwork will be emailed to the nominator and the nominee by October 6, 2017.  Any nominator who does not hear from the committee by then should contact Colleen Hammel at or via phone at 333-0462.

Thank you!

Colleen Hammel, Chair

“Stay tuned for the Fall Mum Sale in September.  Information is coming soon!

But, until then . . . enjoy the September poem by John Updike.

"The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.
-   John Updike, September
