Curious about what happens to your data after you deposit in the Illinois Data Bank? In this Nudge, we introduce you to the data curation process performed by the Research Data Service staff. The depth of the dataset review depends on the size of the dataset deposited, how well it is documented, and the tools available to us to open the files. The purpose of a review is to ensure that the datasets we host are complete, understandable, and usable now and into the future.

Curation activities:

⇒ Check files and metadata (e.g. keywords, license)
⇒ Review the documentation thoroughly to understand the data
⇒ Run and validate files, including computer code, if possible and applicable
⇒ Identify any areas in need of major additions or changes
⇒ Request missing information and provide suggestions

Note: these reviews are not considered peer review and do not judge the core scientific analysis, methodologies, or conclusions behind the data.

Curator communications:

⇒ To maximize the benefit of publishing the data, depositors will receive a personal email from Research Data Service staff relating to suggested changes to metadata and/or data file(s).
⇒ All suggestions from curators are optional, and depositors have the right to accept or reject those suggestions.
