FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy Fall fellow Secretariat Members! I hope the start of the new school year is going well for each of you. Although it’s been unusually warm recently, the leaves are starting to turn colors and fall from the trees. Definitely a sign that summer has concluded. I’ve already started eating Halloween candy – how about you?

If you weren’t able to attend the September Career Connections program you missed a real treat (Halloween pun intended). At the last minute, Chancellor Jones had to cancel his plans to speak and Elyne Cole was gracious enough to step in and give remarks. She’s always been a big supporter of The Secretariat, and her comments proved that once again. She no doubt is a great asset for our organization and the entire campus. Right before our program was set to begin, Chancellor Jones walked through the door! We were pleasantly surprised. It meant a lot to us all that he took the time from his very busy schedule to attend our event. While he was not prepared to provide lengthy remarks, he did follow Ms. Cole and reinforced what The Secretariat and staff support mean to this entire campus. Having the presence of these two administrators at our program, and knowing that their comments were genuine, should mean a lot to every single one of us.

I hope that you are able to attend the Boss of the Year celebration on October 18. This is a great way to recognize our bosses and to thank them for everything that they do for us. See details about the event below.

Are you planning to attend the All Employee Expo on Thursday, October 5? It will be held in the Illini Union from 10am-2pm. The Secretariat will have a booth. Stop by and say hello. If you come with colleagues who are not Secretariat members, please make an extra effort to stop by. Anyone who is eligible to become a member will receive half off of the regular membership price if they sign up from the date of the Expo through October 12. And, while you’re there you and your colleagues can put your name in for a drawing to receive one free lunch for a future Career Connections event.

Did you know that The Secretariat turns 70 years old in October 2018!? I think Kathryn Hanson would be so pleased to see that the organization she created is still going strong, and carrying forward her vision of support for Civil Service staff here on campus. To honor her and celebrate 70 years in the right way, I am suggesting that an ad hoc committee be created to start planning a special event. If you would like to serve on this committee, or would like to nominate someone to serve, please let me know by October 30. I would also like to hear your ideas for a celebratory event. I will be happy to share those with the committee once it’s created.

As I’ve mentioned previously, the Executive Board is always seeking suggestions from you on how we can help you grow professionally. We are creating a survey that will be sent out in November asking for your feedback on communications, professional development, and mentoring. Please watch for this survey to hit your inbox next month. We would like every member to complete the survey. We want to know what you would like from us!

BOSS OF THE YEAR

NOMINATIONS ARE IN FOR THE 2017 SECRETARIAT BOSS OF THE YEAR

Nominations for the 2017 Secretariat Boss of the Year have been received and a winner has been chosen.  The speaker at the October 18th luncheon will be the 2016-17 Boss of the Year recipient Marlah Bonner-McDuffie, Associate Dean for Advancement, College of Media.

We hope that you and your boss will join us for the luncheon.  It is a great way to acknowledge your appreciation of them!

SOCIAL EVENTS

What we're up to:

Along with coordinating the monthly Career Connections meetings, the Program and Events Committee also schedules events where Secretariat members can interact with one another in an informal setting. Members and their guests – guests are always welcome! – are encouraged to relax and take a moment to get better acquainted with fellow Secretariat members.

After 5:00 PlansMark your calendars and plan to meet your Secretariat colleagues and their guests after work at Baxter’s American Grille on Wednesday, October 25.  Baxter’s is located at 100 Trade Center Drive in Champaign (near McDonald’s on South Neil).  Their appetizers are half-price all evening on Wednesdays and there is usually a happy hour drink special until 6:00 p.m. If you plan to join us, kindly send a note to TheSecretariat@illinois.edu so we can reserve enough space for the entire group. If the weather is mild, we will try to arrange for seating out on their patio. Ask the host/hostess for the Secretariat group.

Crafty Event Fall is that magical time of year full of warm colors, cozy notions, and bountiful harvests. Delight Flower Farm has scheduled a Succulent Pumpkin Centerpiece Workshop at Riggs Brewery on High Cross Road to help you capture some of these colors for your indoor décor. On Sunday, October 15 at noon, learn how to create a fall centerpiece including some easy to grow succulents. Pre-registration is required and the cost does include materials. Suggestions and Ideas - Do you know of some place on campus or in the surrounding community that would be interesting for Secretariat members to visit?  Have an idea for a fun lunch hour or evening event? PHILANTHROPY

THANK YOU to everyone that purchased mums!  We appreciate your support.  The money will go towards helping the family we are adopting for the holidays. Look for information in the November newsletter.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month  - we would like to collect travel size toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash and regular and children size toothbrushes. We will pack them individually and take them to the homeless shelters to distribute. Please consider donating at the next Secretariat luncheon or drop off at 377 HAB or 4111 Beckman Institute by October 31.
