Happy November fellow Secretariat members! As I was looking for an inspirational quote for this month’s newsletter, I found one to be perfect in a couple of different ways.

We know that Thanksgiving is the time of year when we should all give thanks and count our blessings for what we have in our lives. I immediately thought of each of you when reading this quote. You are each an asset of The Secretariat. You each contribute in your own way to the success of this great organization. Whether that be serving on a committee, donating to our philanthropy efforts, or attending a Career Connections event. It is because of you that we continue to thrive and grow, and for that, I am thankful!

We have one member, in particular, who has been not only a great asset to The Secretariat but to the Campus and Civil Service staff across campus as well. I’m speaking of Susie Conrad. Susie is retiring on December 15. As most of you know, Susie has been a committed Secretariat member serving as President from 2008-09, in addition to, serving on the Executive Board from 2004 to 2013. Susie also represents the Clerical/Secretarial Class EEO-5 on the Staff Advisory Council, and is a member of the SURS Member Advisory Committee. Susie has spent her University career making sure that Civil Service staff have a voice on this campus. It is because of Susie’s efforts and dedication that she is eligible to receive the Bess G. Matteson Award. The Executive Board approved Susie’s nomination, and she will be presented with the award at the November luncheon. This very special award has only been given 9 times since its creation 39 years ago! The criteria is as follows:

  • Must have been a member of The Secretariat for 10 years. Board membership need not be consecutive.
  • Must have served as an elected officer of The Secretariat for at least one term and served as a member of the Executive Board for at least 5 years.
  • Must have made an outstanding contribution on one or more of the following committees: Civil Service Advisory Committee, Staff Advisory Council, and Committee on the Status of Women, Employee’s Advisory Committee to the Retirement Board, etc.
  • Must have made a major contribution to the improvement of life as a Civil Service Employee.
  • Must have a minimum of 15 years of service at the University of Illinois.

We hope that you can make every effort to attend this very special event. If you would like to say a few words about Susie at the event please contact me directly and I will make sure that you are added to the program.

Let’s also be thankful for our bosses as they should be considered our assets as well. Without their support so many of us would not be able to participate in this organization actively. Several outstanding bosses were recognized at the Boss of the Year Celebration in October. Thank you to Colleen Hammel, Anne Price, Erica Hanson, Teresa Harvey, and Jim McGraw who did an excellent job with the program this year. The committee did not have an easy job selecting just one winner. See the committee’s section below for the highlights.

We need your help! The Executive Board is continuing our message of wanting to hear from you. How can we help you do your jobs better? What should we be doing better? What interests do you have? Are you interested in becoming a mentor or a mentee? In order to answer these questions we would like you to take a few minutes to complete a survey: The survey will be open until Monday, November 27. We welcome all feedback.

Congratulations to The Secretariat’s 2017 Boss of the Year award recipient Susan Key, Director of Portfolio Human Resources in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, who received the award at the October 18 luncheon held at the Illini Union.  She was nominated by Kate Day.

Other nominees included Amy Hubbard, Business/Administrative Associate in Illinois International Programs, nominated by Jill Ouellette; and Beth McKown, Office Administrator in the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, nominated by Stacy Dudzinski.

Marlah Bonner-McDuffie, 2016 Boss of the Year award recipient and Associate Dean for Advancement in the College of Media, spoke to the group about leadership.

I would like to thank the members of the Boss of the Year committee: Erica Hanson, Teresa Harvey, Jim McGraw and Anne Price, and the nominators Stacy Dudzinski, Kate Day and Jill Ouellette, for taking the time to nominate their outstanding bosses.  See pictures below.

Holidays bring excitement and families together. But it can also be a hardship on families, wondering how they will put food on the table and presents under the tree. The Philanthropy Committee on behalf of the Secretariat will donate $100 (4 -$25 gift cards to purchase turkeys) to the Office of Volunteer Programs for the Thanksgiving Basket Drive.  

We will continue the tradition and adopt a family from the Faculty/Staff Assistance Program (FSAP). This will be our 9th year adopting a family to help at the holidays. It is with your support and contributions that we are able to help a family in need and ensure that they have a wonderful holiday. Please stayed tuned….adopt-a-family information coming soon.
