LIBRARY TIP OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER

Experts in the Library

The University Library offers a deep bench of expert librarians with vast knowledge across various disciplines. These individuals can—and should—serve as your primary contacts within the Library. As your “go-to people,” they will assist your research, course work, or students in exploring the information landscape within your discipline. In general, these professionals fall into three major categories: subject specialists, regional/language experts, and those with expertise in other specialized areas.

Subject Specialists

What can subject specialist librarians do?

  • Assist you in conducting searches related to your research and teaching.
  • Help you discover special collections at Illinois (or elsewhere) that complement your research or the needs of your students.
  • Connect you to experts within the Library to develop data management plans, conduct research with data, or digitize content.
  • Show you how to include your scholarship in IDEALS, the University’s digital repository.
  • Work with your students to improve their research and/or critical thinking skills.
  • Lead virtual or in-person sessions focused on specific assignments.
  • Create library guides that provide instructional resources for your students.
  • Listen to recommendations you make on resources the Library might acquire.
  • Answer your questions about the Library.

Regional/Language Experts

What can regional/language experts do?

  • Serve as guides as you navigate research materials across a swath of global topics. At the International and Area Studies Library, multilingual librarians can help you examine these disciplines: African Studies; East Asian Studies; European Union Studies; Global Studies; Latin American and Caribbean Studies; Middle East and North African Studies; Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; and South Asian Studies.
  • Connect you to scholars and communities worldwide. Using the Illinois Global Connection Map, you can grasp the impact the Library has made through international travel and get in touch with colleagues who have visited particular locations abroad.

Other Experts

The Library is home to a growing number of experts in specialized topics. What can these experts do?
