| | FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome back! I hope that each of you enjoyed the holidays and time off from work.
I’d like to recognize Sonja Bean, Jim McGraw, and Anne Price for their efforts making sure that the family we adopted had a nice Christmas. They used their own personal time to go shopping for this family, and we all know that our time is precious during the holiday season. On behalf of the entire Secretariat organization “THANK YOU” for buying and delivering the family gifts. And, thank you fellow members for your contributions to the Philanthropy Committee throughout the year. If it weren’t for you, there would be no shopping to be done at all.
Have you been working towards a college degree and will be graduating in May? If so, please let me or the Membership & Mentoring Committee know. We would like to celebrate your achievement by announcing it in the May newsletter. Even if you’re not graduating just yet would you mind sharing the school and program you’re enrolled in? We have many members who are enrolled in various programs, but may not be aware of others who are trying to accomplish the same thing. Sharing this information with each other could be beneficial when wanting to know what classes to take or getting feedback on professors. Finding a study partner could be very beneficial. We may even have some members who want to work on their degrees, but don’t know where to begin. What better place to start than with a fellow Secretariat member. We would like to publish this information in our newsletter.
Are you interested in forming a Mentee/Mentor relationship to help with professional development or would you like a point of contact for various procedural/policy questions? Are you looking for a way to build more relationships across campus? The Membership & Mentoring Committee is ready to help. It doesn’t matter how much experience you do or do not have. Everyone can use help occasionally. And, the best part of a mentoring relationship is the lasting friendship that is built along the way. Please complete the link provided in their section below, or reach out to one of the committee members if you have questions.
Lunch at the President’s House was wonderful last month. A good time was had by all, and Dr. Johnson-Killeen and her staff were the most gracious of hosts. It was great seeing everyone and spending time catching up with each other while enjoying great food and touring the house. I hope that you can attend the tour of the recently renovated Natural History Building this month. Did you know that this building is 125 years old and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places? It will be great to see what they’ve done to bring the building into the 21st century while maintaining the historical features. Many of us don’t have a lot of chances to explore the buildings on this campus, and I think this is a great opportunity to do just that if your schedule will allow.
As you will see below, the Nominations/Elections Committee is officially seeking nominations for Elected Officers. If you know someone that you would like to see in one of these roles, or if you would like to fulfill one of these roles yourself, please submit a nomination. This is a great way to contribute to our organization while learning and/or improving leadership skills at the same time. I know that we have many members that can easily fulfill these positions!
“January, the first month of the year. A perfect time to start all over again. Changing energies and deserting old mood. New beginnings, new attitudes.” – Charmaine J. Forde

PHILANTHROPY
A busy time of the year, stores were packed, list in hand, 3 elves set out to find the perfect gifts for “our family”. A brief conversation with the Mom and the 5 children wish list in hand, we were busy looking, discussing, and picking the ideal gifts. Each child received items from their list and extra to add. Under the tree on Christmas day; basketball hoop, foosball game, karaoke machine, 2 remote control cars, purses, drawing supplies, games, movie gift card, dinner gift card, Kohl’s gift card for clothes, and so much more would bring the children smiles and cheer and an electric skillet for Mom to feed the crew.
Thank you to Jim McGraw and Anne Price for being the additional elves. Jim and I met the Mom to give her the presents and hugs and tears all around. A blessing she kept saying, A single Mom working 2 jobs and picking up extra hours when she can, she was overwhelmed with the generosity of the Secretariat members. She was excited for Christmas and knew her children would be happy come Christmas morning. I asked if the older boys would be home “It is a surprise…my brother can do the lifting!”
A special “thank you” to all of the Secretariat members that contributed and donated at Christmas and those that purchase the plants during the year to help make this a special time of the year. I know that Jim was very happy and humbled to see the excitement of the Mom and we can only imagine that same excitement she saw when her children opened the presents. We get to see firsthand what your generosity can do.
I hope each one of you had the same excitement and blessing during the holiday season! May the new year bring you happiness, joy, and wishes galore!
Happy New Year!
Sonja J. Bean, Chair Jim McGraw |
