Hello Graduate Student,

Starting something new can often feel like a bit of a mystery. That can be true of graduate school as well. As you settle into the semester, it's a good idea to start learning more about your program and your profession. Graduate programs are fast-paced, so understanding your program’s expectations is important for getting off to a strong start.

Be a detective! Ask questions, explore departmental and professional websites, and connect with your support network. This will help you begin to create a plan for your time at Illinois.

We've created a list of five questions to help you get started. Check out our video and blog to learn more!

You might also look through our Starting Strong web page for additional tips.

Campus Spotlight

While you're investigating your program and degree, now is also a great time to learn more about the University of Illinois campus!

  • Take a look at the Virtual Tour YouTube series that highlights campus locations and facts. Or check out this Photo Tour, which shows some stunning photos of campus.
  • These Self-Guided Tours will give you a look at how large our campus is! Feel free to click through the pictures to learn more or walk to the campus sites, if possible. (Make sure to wear a facemask and use social distancing if you decide to visit campus!)
  • Are you interested in how our campus has changed over time? Check out the Mapping History website that was developed at the University Library!

Next Steps

Start asking questions! Identify key people in your program or other campus units and find a time to chat with them about tips and strategies to be successful in your program.

Meet other campus units. Your support network is not limited to the students, faculty, and staff in your department! Other units on campus - including the Graduate College, the University Library, and the Cultural and Resource Centers - are here to support you. Check GradLINKS or relevant websites for information for upcoming events and workshops.

Remember to check and pay your student account. Tuition and fee charges for the fall term are billed in September. Payments are due on the 28th of each month. Learn more at https://paymybill.uillinois.edu.
