Using Illinois Experts
Illinois Experts (experts.illinois.edu), jointly developed by the University Library and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR), is a searchable, online portal that showcases the breadth and depth of research and scholarship produced on the Urbana-Champaign campus and facilitates connections between researchers. As of Spring 2018, Illinois Experts includes more than 2,100 researcher and scholar profiles that have been populated with more than 135,000 publications via an automated weekly update from Elsevier’s Scopus citation and abstract database.
Researchers can enhance their own profiles by logging in via the “Edit your profile” button on the experts.illinois.edu homepage and adding a photo, research interests, keywords, links to other online profiles or social media, and so on. Researchers are also encouraged to add their ORCID researcher ID to their profile (or to create an ORCID ID via their Experts profile).
Researchers are encouraged to begin using Experts to discover possible campus collaborators and to share information about this portal with others—students and postdocs may find the portal to be useful in identifying faculty expertise and potential mentors.
Project Scope and Who’s Included
Illinois Experts continues to grow and will soon contain 2,500 researcher and scholar profiles, including all Urbana-Champaign tenure-system faculty and nearly 500 specialized and emeritus faculty and academic professional researchers. Profiles for tenure-system faculty are created soon after their appointments are recorded in the Banner administrative system (appointments that have begun since the start of 2018 will be added to the portal later this month). A limited number of profiles for specialized and emeritus faculty and academic professional researchers are available and must be requested by the researchers’ home college or institute.
Disciplines from all corners of campus will be represented on the Experts portal. However, because the automated information from Scopus does not adequately represent the breadth of arts and humanities scholarship, the Library is working to manually collect and populate information on monograph, book chapter, exhibition, performance, and other forms of research and creative output from alternative sources. A number of these profiles have been added to the public portal, and more will be added throughout the semester.
Why Develop This Portal?
The campus strategic plan calls for stronger infrastructure to foster scholarship, discovery, and innovation, and specifically includes the development of a faculty profile-sharing database. Illinois Experts is the first step in achieving that goal. The portal enables faculty, students, and staff to discover research expertise and potential collaborators. In addition, Experts provides a central portal for external audiences, including potential off-campus collaborators and research sponsors, seeking information about the breadth of research strengths at Illinois. It also supports the economic development mission of the campus by improving the accessibility of our scholarly expertise for both corporate partners and private citizens.
