Happy March to you all! Spring is almost here, and not only does that mean that warmer weather is on its way, but our committees are hard at work as well.

The Nominations/Elections Committee is still seeking President-Elect nominations. Consider nominating yourself or a fellow member for this position. I know that we have many members who would do an excellent job in this role. The deadline is March 22.

Please consider donating to the Socks and Sanitizer Wipes Drive for the Phoenix Daytime Drop-in Center. They really appreciated our donated items of toothbrushes and toothpastes from last fall. Socks are always needed by the homeless, and the sanitizer wipes are necessary to help keep the center clean. Donations are being accepted by the Philanthropy Committee through March 21st. See below for more details.

If you’ve been thinking about continuing your education then you won’t want to miss the March Career Connections event this month. Speakers from Eastern Illinois University (EIU) will be in attendance to provide information on continuing education opportunities at EIU. See Career Connections below to register.

In April, the Office Professional of the Year award will be presented at Career Connections. I know that the committee is busy soliciting nominations as I write this. Save the date on your calendars to help us celebrate with all of the deserving candidates.

Socks and Sanitizer Drive

Did you know….that socks are the least donated clothing items and yet the most in-demand for needy locals? Cozy toes equate to more than just comfort for people without adequate shelter. The protection of a good pair of socks can save the homeless from frostbite in the winter, and can protect them from injuries of the foot that can lead to painful and even life-threatening infections and diseases. Finally, well-protected feet are key to the mobility that is vitally important to them.  Put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and you can see how clean, warm socks are a true treasure.  Let’s warm some toes and help the homeless.

Sanitizer wipes…a staple in everyone’s home and office. The Phoenix Daytime Center is in need of sanitizer wipes to clean the surfaces everyday as they prepare for the next day. The Center is open from 12-5 Tuesday-Friday and welcomes the homeless to warm coffee, games, and conversation. The Center is there to help those in need and works directly will all of the shelters in Urbana and Champaign.

Please consider donating new socks and sanitizer wipes. Collection will be taken at the March luncheon on March 21,  but you can also drop off donations to Sonja Bean, 377 HAB or Jim McGraw, 4111 Beckman.

This is just one small way that we, as Illinois Office Professionals, The Secretariat, can give back to the community. Thanks so much!
