Greetings from the Department Head
On January 1st, I celebrated my one-year anniversary as head. Looking back over the past year, I couldn’t be more pleased to be serving this department, whose faculty, staff, students, and alumni continue to impress, encourage, and motivate me on a daily basis.
Let me fill you in a little on what’s been happening.
Cancer drug starts clinical trials in human brain cancer patients
Chemistry professor Paul Hergenrother, U of I veterinary oncologist Timothy Fan, and their colleagues are testing the safety of a new cancer drug in a clinical trial for humans with late-stage brain cancer.
Work complete on state-of-the-art Center for Theoretical Chemistry
Faculty, staff, and visitors can enjoy the newly constructed Center for Theoretical Chemistry on the third floor of Noyes Lab.
Construction was completed in December of 2017, and research groups were able to move in in January.
Research spotlight: Jefferson Chan
Professor Jefferson Chan joined the Illinois faculty in 2014.
In this 3-minute video, he gives a glimpse into his team’s research involving synthetic chemistry to develop small molecules, allowing us to see what has never been seen before.
Jinwoo Cheon recognized for international achievement
Jinwoo Cheon (PhD, ’93, Girolami) is the recipient of the 2017-18 Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement.
Dr. Cheon and other international award recipients will be honored in Urbana in April 2018.
Continuing the legacy of Harold Snyder
In 1990, students and friends of Illinois chemistry professor and alumnus Harold R. Snyder (BS, ’31) established a fund in his memory.
Today, the Snyder Scholars program honors his legacy by providing outstanding undergraduates with an opportunity to “try out” graduate school the summer before their senior year.
