It’s always grant-writing season, but fall is particularly a busy time. The majority of funders, including AHRQ, ASPR, CDC, DOD, DOE, FDA, NASA, NOAA, NSF, USG, etc., require that grant applications now include a Data Management Plan (DMP). We've been consulted on numerous occasions because a submitted DMP was flagged as inadequate by agency staff or reviewers. To get started on your DMP, check out our list of DMP Best Practices.

Ways to make your DMP competitive:

1. Be as open as possible

DMPs are a component of a growing effort to increase public access to research outcomes. In your DMP, articulate how you plan to openly share data. If that’s not possible (and there are times when it’s not), indicate why and what steps you plan to take instead to promote openness and transparency.

2. Highlight competitive resources at Illinois

Illinois is unique in its commitment to establishing support for data management. Take advantage of resources such as having someone on your project participate in Data Management Training or using the Illinois Data Bank to publish data instead of using personal websites or other unstable resources.

3. Get feedback on your DMP from the RDS

The Research Data Service provides free, fast, and confidential feedback on draft DMPs. We work with library-based subject experts so that our feedback incorporates disciplinary and data management expertise, and users of this service report receiving favorable commits on their DMPs from reviewers. More time is always helpful, but turnaround is generally 1-2 business days. Email your draft DMP to researchdata@library.illinois.edu or select the "Request feedback" option on the last page of your DMP template in the DMPTool.
