Hashash named to Surfside collapse investigative team

CEE professor Youssef Hashash has been named to a team of forensic engineering experts who will conduct a technical investigation into the June 24, 2021, partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Fla., the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced Aug. 25, 2021. Also serving on the NIST team will be CEE at Illinois alumni James R. Harris (MS 75, PhD 80) and Jack P. Moehle (BS 78, MS 78, PhD 80).

In his latest research effort providing third-generation simulation data, assistant professor Alireza Talebpour will explore the impacts of automated driving systems on human behavior. Talebpour received funding from the Federal Highway Administration for the project.

DOE Committee Appointment
Professor and Head Ana P. Barros has been appointed to the Department of Energy Biological and Environmental Research Advisory Committee.

Election to Board of Governors
Professor Paolo Gardoni has been elected to the ASCE's Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Board of Governors by the EMI membership. 

Top Paper Award
A paper by CEE alumnus John T. Trimmer (PhD 19) as lead author and associate professor Jeremy Guest as corresponding author has been named the Top Paper in Environmental Policy for 2020 by the journal Environmental Science & Technology. Additional authors include assistant professor R.D. Cusick, and alumnae Hannah Lohman (also a current PhD student) and Diana Byrne. Read paper 

Journal Review Editor
Assistant professor Shelly Zhang has been invited to become a review editor of the journal Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, considered the flagship journal in her research field. Read more
