While things may look a little different this semester, we’re glad to have so many of our #ActiveILLINI back on campus! Here in Campus Recreation, we remain committed to providing opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and community patrons to access the wellness resources they need to thrive. We appreciate the flexibility and patience of our wonderful participants and dedicated instructors as we work to maintain a safe group fitness environment for everyone.

As always, we encourage you to reach out to us if you have thoughts about how we at Campus Rec can continue to foster a sense of community or ideas for resources we can provide during this time. VOTE ON NOVEMBER 3!

Just as you care to engage in behaviors to promote your own health, it’s also important to take the time, if you can, to promote the health of our democracy, and voting is a critical part of that process! Illinois has same-day voter registration, and you can visit the website of the Illinois State Board of Elections to find useful information about how to register and locate your polling place. There are also lots of great tools out there like Vote411 and Ballotpedia that will allow you to look up what’s on your ballot ahead of time so you can be well informed when you step into the voting booth.

WEEKLY WELLNESS

We just came out of October, which is Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) month. EIM encourages health care providers to include exercise when designing comprehensive treatment plans for patients.

Exercise can…

  • Lift your mood
  • Boost energy
  • Help to manage stress and tension
  • Improve cognitive function
  • Promote a positive attitude and outlook
  • Help you achieve better quality sleep
  • Improve self-image and self-confidence
  • Help you to get the benefits of the outdoors, if that’s where you choose to exercise

EIM also leads an initiative called Exercise is Medicine® On Campus, which calls upon colleges and universities to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health. Within this initiative, the American College of Sports Medicine recognizes Illinois as a gold-level campus!

Illinois has earned gold-level status through our collective work to provide the resources, events and programs you need to make physical activity and exercise a lifelong habit. If you feel like planning, scheduling and organizing your workouts is just another thing to stress about, don’t! Just move more, with more intensity, and sit less. You don’t have to make huge life changes to see the benefits. Just start building more activity into your day, one step at a time.

MUSIC TO MOTIVATE YOUR WORKOUT

A growing body of evidence suggests that listening to music while exercising can improve the quality of your workout. If you’re looking for the energy to head to the polls, or just want to boost your spirits, check out this week’s Power to the People workout playlist!

A QUICK BITE FROM THE INSTRUCTIONAL KITCHEN

As the weather shifts and it starts to get dark earlier, it’s the perfect time to cuddle up with a warm blanket and watching movies. Whether you’ve been watching spooky Halloween movies, or are getting an extra early start on your holiday movie watching (just us?) popcorn is definitely the best treat to accompany the coziness. Even better, popcorn is a whole grain and provides necessary dietary fiber, and there are lots of ways to spruce it up while maintaining (or boosting) its health benefits!

Try these three popcorn recipes to spruce up your next bowl!
