Dear UIC Language Student:

Learning a language is partly about grammar and partly about exploring other cultures. Where do piñatas come from, for example? It turns out: from China, by way of Spain!

  • Come to our free online drop-in hours to chat with a peer tutor about work in your 100-level class: we can help with online homework, for example.

  • Check out our Instagram to find out more about sports and fashion, music and movies, in Spanish, German, Italian, and French.

  • Read our Peer tutor blog:  Ready to relax with a French comedy/time travel film? Or is a Spanish horror film about demons more your thing? Peer tutors review both this week.

Meet Spanish tutor Celeste!

"I am a teaching of Spanish major here at UIC. As a freshman, I was not sure what I wanted to major in. I took a foreign language class as a requirement for the college of LAS. I decided to pick Spanish to fill my requirement because it was a language they meant a lot to me. It was the language my parents practiced at home and the language I used to communicate with my community. As I went on with the semester I noticed I love learning about the language! I realized that there is so much to learn, and that practice only makes perfect. I hope to learn and practice more with you, in order to reach our end goals together!"

Nikki on "Médecins Sans Frontières" or "Doctors Without Borders"

"As an undergraduate student with her heart set on both medicine and the French language, I’ve been advised to choose between the two, because “it is not necessary to know French as a medical practitioner.” However, one of the biggest, most successful non-profit organizations requires both of these skills. This organization is called Médecins Sans Frontières or “Doctors Without Borders” and was founded in 1971 by French doctors and journalists who wished to 'expand impartial and equal healthcare across borders without considering factors that can normally affect access to healthcare (such as politics or religion).' Their goal is to provide free healthcare all around the globe, often in Francophone (French-speaking) countries. My own professional goal is to work with Doctors Without Borders so that I can pursue both of my passions by practicing medicine in French-speaking countries."

German Soccer Terms

Hallo German students! Today’s Instagram post consists of two awesome German soccer terms! The first is “Schiri” which means “referee.” The term comes from the full word Schiedsrichter. Oftentimes abbreviations stem from the first letters of each syllable in a long word. The second is “Elfmeter.” This directly translates to “eleven meters,” and is the term for a penalty kick, which is taken exactly eleven meters from the goal!

Here is a link to some more cool soccer terms as well!
