University of Illinois Extension, along with Rural Partners, will host a discussion about how the November 3 election results will affect rural communities in Illinois and the country. The webinar, The 2020 Presidential and Congressional Elections: Rural America’s Impact and Stake, is 9 a.m. Tuesday, November 10. John Jackson, visiting professor from Southern Illinois University's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, will share his perspective and lead the discussion. Jackson, former SIUC chancellor, is a frequent contributor to local, state, and national media coverage of government and politics, and edits the Simon Review series. The webinar is free and open to the public, but you must register to attend.

 

 
 
 
 

On Tuesday, November 10, from 10 a.m. until noon, the Illinois Broadband Office will be partnering with the USDA Rural Development team and the Missouri Broadband Office to host a webinar on the USDA Community Connect Grant Program, which is currently accepting applications. This event will be recorded and made available for those who are unable to attend. Eligible applicants for the program include local governments, nonprofits, for-profit corporations, and limited liability companies. The USDA Telecommunications General Field Representative for Missouri and Illinois will present on the current open grant cycle for the Community Connect Grant Program. Attendees will receive a general overview of the program, application highlights, and helpful suggestions in navigating the process. The workshop will also provide updates on upcoming initiatives from the USDA Rural Development offices and general updates from the broadband leaders for both states. University of Illinois Extension is offering a webinar, Small Business Assistance – Overview of International Trade Center Services (including CARES ACT) at noon on Tuesday, November 10. This presentation will cover the benefits and opportunities of exporting and how Illinois SBDC’s International Trade Centers can assist in taking advantage of them. The webinar will review State and Federal trade promotion and export funding programs available, including the Illinois State Export Promotion grant program (ISTEP). The discussion will cover SBDC International Trade Center programs and services, trade promotion programs, US Commercial Service, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Illinois DCEO-Office of Trade and Investment – ISTEP, international trade show opportunities, export funding programs, US Small Business Administration – Export Loans, and EXIM Bank financing and insurance programs. Presenters are Jean Lin, Program Manager, International Trade Center (Illinois SBDC at College of DuPage) and Mariel Huasanga, Director, International Trade Center (Illinois SBDC at Champaign County EDC). On November 12, at 7 p.m., the University of Illinois Grainger College of Engineering will host COVID-19 Update: Research-Driven Initiatives, a webinar describing the research to fight COVID-19. Grainger College of Engineering Dean Bashir will host a discussion with Grainger Engineering researchers to learn how research-driven initiatives are meeting the needs of a changing world. From pandemic modeling to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and mobile community health apps, Grainger Engineering is at the forefront of Coronavirus research. Presenters include Professors Carolyn Beck (who will address epidemic modeling), Jeremy Guest (who will talk about personal protective equipment or PPE), Sanjay Patel (who will talk about the Safer Illinois app) and Abigail Wooldridge (addressing mobileSHIELD).
