Students having fun at French Conversation Hour

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

We're so glad to be in the seventh week with you! This is a great week for students to take stock of what they've done so far this semester --and what better way to do this than to think in terms of creating a portfolio. Whether you wish to implement this feature now or in the future, using Blackboard class portfolios is a great way to stay goal-oriented and keep track of progress.

If you're interested in learning more about this exciting feature, check out our free weekly workshop. This week we're talking about Blackboard Portoflio pages. Instructors are also invited to drop in on Friday October 12 for LCSL 505 to hear Anna Szawara (Polish and Russian) talk about using vlogs and duolingo in Basic Language Program classes. As always, feel free to send your questions to us at lclc@uic.edu.

Do you have a project in mind but aren’t sure how to make it work? Is there a technology that you’d like to learn more about or possibly use in your course? The LCLC is here to help! We have tech tools for every kind of project - in any kind of class from beginning language to advanced graduate - and can help you find the best way to integrate them effectively and meaningfully into your teaching. Email us at lclc@uic.edu with all your questions!

Weekly Workshop: Create Blackboard portfolios Do you want your students to keep track of their growth? What about document their accomplishments? Not only are portfolios excellent ways to prepare students professionally, but they keep classes goal-focused and help students to invest in their work. Fortunately, Blackboard's Portfolio feature is easy to use, allows students to integrate assignments from any previous course, and is shareable outside of Blackboard and after the course is over. In this week's workshop, we will show you how to create portfolios that combine multiple file types (images, video, and text). This a great tool for structuring class and enhancing student professional development! Come with your syllabus and ideas!

Can't make the scheduled workshop times below? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu

A teaching with technology tip of the week:

Blackboard Instant Messenger

Blackboard Instant Messenger (formerly known as Pronto) is a free instant messaging and voice chat tool that allows students and instructors to spontaneously meet live, online at any time to discuss their coursework. Blackboard Instant Messenger works with Blackboard Learn to automatically populate students' contact lists with their classmates' names, thereby making it easy for students, faculty and teaching staff to spontaneously collaboarate live online. Blackboard Instant Messenger can also be used as a regular modern Instant Messenger, outside of Blackboard on Windows and Mac systems.

Love and its demons. Spanish secular Music from the XVII and XVIII centuries - FRIDAY, October 12th, 7:00-8:30PM
Through secular songs and cantatas (these last ones, obtained from the Mackworth Manuscript) from different Spanish composers, this program makes a journey through the different stages and forms of love. From the hypnotizing chant of sirens, the lovers’ indecision, and the rancor of indifference and finally the triumph of love; this program shows us the universality and timelessness of the sorrows and pleasures of this feeling.
