December 2018 Newsletter Issue
Message from the President
Hello everyone and happy holidays to you all!
We have so much to talk about, I’m not sure where to begin! Last month was an incredibly awesome Career Connections luncheon from our friends at the Illinois Leadership Center who talked about leadership and the importance of clear communication. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Speaking of leadership, I’d like to give a shout out to our Philanthropy committee that has been providing great leadership for the Illinois Administrative Professionals and our philanthropic mission; they ensured families enjoyed Thanksgiving and are now looking to help a family with holiday gifts through the University. If you’re interested in helping the family, check out Philanthropy’s section below.
Lastly, I hope you are all getting very excited about our 70th Anniversary Celebration which will take place on December 12. It is sure to be a great time and I look forward to seeing you all there. If you would like to show off your IAP pride, we have new clear bags and lunch totes commemorating our 70 years of impact on our campus administrative professionals. You can purchase a bag or lunch tote along with a raffle ticket for tons of other great items at the 70th Celebration. See you then!
Have a wonderful holiday break and happiest of new year celebrations!

This will be a special event to celebrate the organization’s 70 years of bringing members in similar working classifications together for networking, learning from one another and helping each other advance in their careers.
Dr. Lynn Jones will not be able to speak, but we are busily working behind the scenes to secure a speaker with comparable leadership qualities.
The silent auction for the items collected will be conducted as a raffle. Numbered tickets will be available to purchase as you arrive at the luncheon. Purchase your tickets and then put as many as you wish in the buckets representing the items available. At the end of the program, we will pull the raffle tickets from the buckets and announce the winner for each item. Tickets are 1 for $2 or 6 for $10, cash or check only.
Items (click to see) already in Silent Auction:
- Merino wool hand woven scarf
- Silpada jewelry: bracelets, earrings, and necklaces
- Ivy & Fig handbag
- Wooden Block I coaster sets
To support this special event, we are selling lunch coolers and clear bags, which meet the required specifications for UI sporting events. Photos of these items are included here. Order forms may be forwarded to Andrea Fain, Deb McCall or Leta Summers.

The Gift of Time....Sometimes One of the Most Treasured
On Tuesday, December 18th and Wednesday, December 19th we have a wonderful opportunity to volunteer assistance at The Salvation Army Toy Shop. Join other Illinois Administrative Professional members as we assist with various tasks from restocking tables with toys, sorting toys in the receiving area, assisting recipients/clients as they pass through the Toy Shop, and restock & cleanup/prep for the next day. Our volunteer hours are from 1:00pm until 4:30pm (approx) on both Tues & Wed. Your assistance any portion of the afternoon or the entire afternoon is greatly appreciated. Please contact Jill Odom at firstname.lastname@example.org or 333-8065 if you are interested or need additional information.
Another opportunity to volunteer is at the Angel Tree at Market Place Mall. The Angel Tree is in need of volunteers to work 1hr, 2hr, 4hr... any time slot beginning Friday, November 23rd through Saturday, December 15th. Volunteers will need to sign up in advance and commit to attending to the booth. Children are permitted to assist but an adult must be present the entire time period. Please contact Judy Norwood at 217-778-2947 if you are interested or need additional information for yourself or a particular group.
Thank You For Making Someone's Thanksgiving!
The Philanthropy Committee would like to thank all who donated funds or food items for the Thanksgiving baskets. We were able to deliver SIX complete baskets (bags) to Stone Creek Church on Friday November 16. They were full of all the necessary Thanksgiving meal goodies along with a $25.00 gift card to Meijer. The church had many applicants for these baskets with some families on a waiting list. Our contribution was definitely appreciated. Thank you for your generosity and best wishes for the upcoming Holiday Season.
