Working from home has helped our community stay safer during the COVID-19 crisis. Similarly, handling data securely keeps all of us safer. It’s a team effort! When you protect important data, you help the University of Illinois System stay compliant with laws and regulations. You also help keep valuable information out of the hands of cyber-criminals.

What to Do:

Be aware of the type of data you use or have access to in your regular work. Some types of data, like credit card information or Social Security Numbers, have more restrictions on their access and use. In addition, student data and health data are subject to privacy laws. This kind of data needs extra care. If you’re not sure what kind of data you work with, see the Data Classification Flowchart at https://cybersecurity.uillinois.edu/job_aids.

Never send sensitive or high-risk data via email. If you need to send that type of data, you may be able to use PEAR (Protected Email Attachment Repository). PEAR is a messaging service that allows users to communicate and exchange confidential information. Check out https://www.aits.uillinois.edu/services/application_services/PEAR for more information.

Stay safe, stay secure. Contact securitysupport@illinois.edu with questions or feedback.
