The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois at Chicago will join a national effort to close the achievement gap and produce more college degrees. This new national initiative is being led by the Association for Public and Land-grant Universities. Both universities will develop new strategies to improve student performances through student retention and persistence.

Several U of I System leaders have been chosen to serve on transition teams that will help guide policy and initiatives for Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker's new administration. U of I System Executive Vice President Barbara Wilson and UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis will serve on the Educational Success Committee. Kim Kidwell, dean of Urbana's College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, will serve on the Growing our Agriculture Economy Committee.

The UIC's College of Medicine at Rockford is producing the top recommend vaccine for shingles called Shringrix. The shingles virus affects nearly one million people each year and Rockford's research was vital in the creation of this vaccine. Royalties from this vaccine will contribute to future research projects on the Rockford campus, such as developing a vaccine for lymphatic filariasis.

|The 2018 midterm election increased the number of U of I System alumni serving as legislators in Washington and Springfield. At the federal level, two-degree UIC alum Jesús "Chuy" García was elected to represent Illinois' 4th district in the U.S. House of Representatives. At the state level, a total of nine new alumni were elected to serve in the state capitol.
President Tim Killeen and President Emeritus Robert Easter toured the Chicago High School for Agricultural Science to observe programs that encourage students to explore their interest in math and science in the field of agriculture. The school has a strong partnership with the U of I System and many of its students choose to continue their education at one of the three U of I universities.
|On November 27, Illinois Connection and the system's Institute of Government and Public Affairs hosted a reception for newly elected members of the Illinois General Assembly. Alumni working in government in Springfield and area alumni also attended this reception along with U of I System leadership.
President Killeen and President Lisa Freeman of Northern Illinois University (NIU) hosted a joint meeting of the U of I and the NIU caucuses on November 28. Caucus members were updated on the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI) and Illinois Innovation Network (IIN). President Freeman addressed how NIU will serve as the first IIN hub outside of the U of I System.
