Undergraduate Friday Seminar looking for featured speakers

The Undergraduate Friday Seminar will be starting up its 2020-21 series soon. The seminar’s goal is to make interesting and higher-level mathematics approachable, show our undergraduates what research mathematics looks like, and give them a glimpse into the sorts of questions mathematicians are working on right now. Every meeting features a guest speaker who presents on a mathematics-based topic of choice.

If you or any of your students would like to give a talk during one of this year’s upcoming meetings, please email undergradseminar@math.illinois.edu. Also, please share the seminar’s continuance with your students as well as this is a great opportunity for them to engage with mathematics in a helpful and interesting way, especially under the limitations imposed by the pandemic.

Late changes to schedules

Students may do the following two kinds of late adds/late course changes:

  • Add independent study courses (Math 390). Deadline: Friday, Sept. 25.
  • Graduate students only: section change from three-credit 400-level class to four-credit section, in cases where the instructor is willing to supervise additional work for additional credits and the student is already registered for the three-credit section. Deadline: Oct. 15.

Otherwise, late course additions of undergraduate classes are done. Students in need of credit hours may consult with their departmental advisor regarding second eight-week classes.

Upcoming deadlines

Reminder: freshman midterm grades are due in Self-Service by noon on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Please make sure all students in your classes can find information about their class grade prior to the Oct. 16 drop deadline.

A new web page has been created to showcase and celebrate graduate student papers, publications, and research. Traditionally, we have posted these on the bulletin board next to the mailroom; however, given the limitations brought by the pandemic, we decided to move to a more evergreen medium that our external audiences can enjoy as well.

Graduate students are invited to submit a request to have their publications addedjournal pubs, conferences, ArXiveverything is welcome!
