New fund honors former College of Media dean and ICR director James W. Carey
James W. Carey Fund for Faculty Excellence will support outstanding faculty in the Institute of Communications Research

An internationally recognized scholar in communications research, James W. Carey (1934-2006) earned two advanced degrees at the University of Illinois and then dedicated nearly half of his life as an academic leader in the College of Media (then known as the College of Communications). Carey was a student of the media’s role in society, and his commentaries on American civil life are some of the most influential in the field of communication.

Body of research: Oyallon-Koloski’s research integrates movement and dance, and style and craft of filmmaking

Jenny Oyallon-Koloski, assistant professor of media and cinema studies, currently researches how filmmakers use figure movement and dance as a tool for storytelling. "I’ve expanded my research methodologies to include more performative, practice-led approaches to studying film and dance by publishing videographic criticism as well as written research,” she said.

Media affiliates win Emmy Awards

Journalism faculty member and alumna Alison Davis, Illinois Public Media, and numerous alumni received Mid-America Emmy Awards and Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards in November. Davis was one of the Big Ten Network producers of Engineering Fire, a documentary about University of Illinois engineers who travel to Haiti to explore the successful testing of a revolutionary solar-cooking device that could greatly improve the lives of impoverished people.
