Updates from the YED Committee  |  February 2021

Scholarship

One of the initiatives of the YED is to sustain a scholarship fund in which young alumni can support current students. There are a lot of different reasons and ways people can give back to their alma mater. This month, YED Scholarship Chair Katie Bell shares why she decided to donate to the YED scholarship fund:

"As I advance through my career as a young professional in Chicago, I've realized how many doors my CEE degree from UIUC opened for me. I found my first job by going to a CEE Job Fair in the Newmark Crane Bay, and have made countless connections with UIUC alumni in the industry ever since. I had such an amazing experience at UIUC and I give back because I want to make sure future generations of civil engineers can enjoy the same."

Networking

The Networking Committee has worked to help our young alumni adapt to the challenges we've all faced over the past year, especially with the changes to remote working and virtual networking. We are able to successfully host our first virtual happy hour in September. The Networking Committee is working hard to plan exciting virtual events this year. We hope that we are able to return to in-person networking events later in 2021.

Career Development

April PE Exams are coming up... Do you have questions about the exam? Want to hear from others who've taken (and passed) the PE exam recently and connect with others who are taking it this cycle? The YED Professional Development Committee is organizing a virtual PE Exam Q&A! Date & time TBD. If you're interested, let us know and reserve your spot by clicking this link or copy-pasting the following URL in your browser: https://forms.gle/3AikSLNhLmKs9Q8A8

Mentoring

There is still time to sign-up for the second round of the YED mentorship program! Applications are due by February 15, 2021.

Our goal is to make this program available to as many CEE alumni as possible and pair recent alumni with experienced alumni to guide and help them develop in their areas of interest.

We ask that our mentors have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience for the benefit of our mentees. To apply to be a mentor, please fill out this Mentor Application.

To apply to be a mentee, please fill out this Mentee Application

Should you have any questions, please contact our committee at uiuc.yed@gmail.com

We look forward to your participation.
