Greetings IAP members!

Happy September! I hope you are doing well. COVID has squashed our summer events and now our fall events are postponed to hopefully spring. What are you looking forward to this fall? I like seeing the leaves change colors and having campfires to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, mainly the smell of fall. I have been receiving ads from Yankee Candle selling their fall scents (Cider, Apple and Cinnamon). I am not a fan of the cold weather that follows the fall season; I would be okay if we only had three of the four seasons. Now that I have put a smile on your face and have you daydreaming, let’s get down to business.

Membership: If you have not renewed your membership for the 2020-21 academic year, please take the time to click on the link below or go to the Illinois Administrative Professionals webpage to renew. A friendly reminder: All membership from 2019-20 ended on June 30, 2020; if you want to continue to receive the monthly newsletter, we need you to renew your membership by September 30, 2020.

Next Zoom Meeting: We are pleased to have Michael Foellmer, our past president, present to the membership “How to Write a Cover Letter and Resume”. This meeting will be on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 12:00 pm; please see the link below to register for the event.

Boss of the Year: Please see information below on how to nominate your boss, deadline is Friday, September 25. The event will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 via Zoom.

IAP Programs & Events is hosting Michael Foellmer on Wednesday, September 16^th.  The presentation will be on Resume & Cover Letter Writing Tips, an event you don’t want to miss.  Mark your calendar, get registered, and take out your notepad.  This event is included in your IAP Membership.

Deadline to register is at midnight on Sunday, September 13^th.

The bosses’ recognition luncheon will be hosted on October 21, 2020. During this luncheon we will recognize all bosses for their daily contributions. We will also name the 2020-2021 Boss of the Year.

Nominations for Boss of the year can be made by any current member of the Secretariat.  The nominator and the nominee must register to attend the October 21^st luncheon, where the winner will be announced. Please submit the Boss of the Year nomination form and the nomination letter to Stacy Walker, swalker5@illinois.edu by September 30, 2020. Please click here for assistance for writing a letter of recommendation.

Acknowledgement of receipt will be emailed to the nominator and the nominee by October 7, 2021. Any nominator who does not hear from the committee by then should contact Stacy Walker or Leta Summers.

Mentoring Matters during the COVID-19 Crisis! In addition to boosting confidence during difficult times, mentoring can help fight isolation. Mentoring is a two-way relationship that benefits organizations and individuals. It doesn’t matter how much or how little experience you have; there is always room to grow, both professionally and personally, with the opportunity to develop friendships along the way. We like to think of it as a partnership where both parties benefit! If you’re interested in becoming either a mentor or mentee complete this form by Friday, Sept. 25. In early October we will work with you to make the best matches possible, and plan a virtual meet and greet to kick off the program for the year.  

LAST REMINDER: IT’S TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP DUES! Current memberships ended June 30! If you are a current member please remember to renew your membership for July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021. Dues were to be paid no later than August 1st. New members may join the organization by paying their dues at the same link, so please forward this newsletter to your colleagues to share all of the exciting things that we are doing and encourage them to sign up today!

Don’t forget that one way to entice a colleague to become a member is to invite them to attend a Career Connections event as your guest. This is a great way to see firsthand what we’re all about.

WE WANT TO KEEP YOU CONNECTED! Have you or a colleague received a promotion or moved to a new office? Are you continuing your education here on campus, EIU, Parkland or elsewhere? Please let Hannah Stites know and she will share that information in the next newsletter. Our goal is to make as many connections as possible to ensure you are successful in whatever it is that you are doing!

Please remember to let us know if you are planning to retire soon so that you can be an IAP retiree member! We will miss you very much, but we hope that you’ll come back for a visit!
