IEL Has Many Resources for Kindergarten Transition

IEL has several resources to assist with kindergarten transition. The podcast Diverse Families and the Transition to Kindergarten may be of interest this month as early childhood program staff assist families with their child’s transition to kindergarten. We offer a Q&A with specific information about Starting Kindergarten in Illinois. Two tip sheets for families specifically focus on the transition to kindergarten: Going to Kindergarten? and Starting Kindergarten? Help Make It a Good Experience!

Illinois Early Learning Standards for Families

Are you looking for a resource to give to families that explains the Illinois Early Learning Standards (IELDS)? Standards Start at Home: A Guide to Early Learning for Parents/Families describes how families of young children can engage in fun activities at home that meet state standards. (Also available in Spanish)

New Parenting Videos Show Curiosity, Early Literacy in Infants

IEL has added two new parenting videos. In Sing Pío, Pío, Pío, a mother sings a familiar song from a book to her son in Spanish, introducing him to the idea that the book’s print and pictures carry meaning. In Who Is in the Mirror? a 3-month-old girl is driven by curiosity as she looks at her reflection in the mirror.

Process Play and STEAM: Getting Started

In our latest podcast, Michelle Patt, an early childhood educator and consultant, discusses strategies for encouraging young children to engage in purposeful play. Her work emphasizes STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) learning through exploration and experimentation.
