The U of I System's Discovery Partners Institute announced nine recipients of its first round of seed funding awards on Mar. 27. These projects are types of work that DPI will undertake. All of the projects will receive funding, staff support and use of the DPI facility in Chicago.

The U of I System has raised more than $2 billion as part of its ambitious public fundraising campaign, the University of Illinois Foundation announced in March. Officially launched in October 2017, the U of I System is about 65 percent toward reaching the campaign's $3.1 billion goal in 2022.

The U of I Board of Trustees approved the appointment of new deans at its universities in Chicago and Springfield on Mar. 14, along with a series of master's degree programs for Chicago's John Marshall Law School.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign


The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will receive a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to fund a project that focuses on recruiting women, minorities, and low-income students into science and engineering fields through high school counselors and STEM clubs.

The project will target middle schools and high schools in Chicago, Champaign-Urbana, and East St. Louis and study the results of the implemented strategies.

Throughout March, Illinois Connection has been hosting new member breakfasts for state representatives in Springfield to help inform members about the U of I System agenda and new initiatives. Illinois Connection has also planned lobby days in Springfield to strengthen advocacy efforts.


OGR organized a breakfast meeting on Mar. 6 with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) leadership and members of the Illinois delegation as part of ongoing efforts to highlight our strong relationship with federal agencies and the Illinois congressional delegation. Reps. Rodney Davis, Mike Bost, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Darin LaHood participated in the event, which featured Dr. Scott Hutchins, Deputy Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics at USDA, and the leadership team from Urbana's College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences.


The U of I System President's Executive Leadership Program (PELP) fellows were in Springfield on Mar. 6 and 7. The PELP fellows were led by U of I System President Tim Killeen and Executive Vice and Vice President for Academic Affairs President Barbara Wilson as they met with state representatives, senators and staff. The fellows were addressed by Deputy Gov. Jesse Ruiz about the important impacts of higher education and his time at Urbana.


Senator Dick Durbin visited the Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE) project lab at Urbana on Mar. 20. During the tour and the roundtable discussion that followed, Sen. Durbin learned more about the RIPE project's initiatives to help improve global food security. This visit demonstrated the importance of investment in agriculture research.


UIS Chancellor Susan Koch met with UIS alumnus and state Sen. Steve McClure on Mar. 25 to discuss the importance of strengthening higher education throughout Illinois through advocacy and funding.


UIC Nursing Dean Terri Weaver was in Washington D.C. on Mar. 25. Dean Weaver met with Rep. Rodney Davis and staff from Rep. Cheri Bustos' office, as well as Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin's offices about the current nursing shortage and the importance of educating nurses for the future.


State Rep. Carol Ammons and the U of I Caucus hosted a dinner meeting on Mar. 27 for members of the state senate and house higher education committees. President Killeen and Urbana Chancellor Robert Jones discussed current issues in higher education and highlighted new initiatives happening within the U of I System.
