May 2019 Newsletter Issue
Message from the President
Happy May! What a celebration we had last month as we honored and recognized our Office Professional of the Year, Penny Nigh, along with all of our wonderful nominees. I am very proud to be part of a group with such successful and hardworking people! Thanks especially to the OPTY planning committee and evaluators, it was so nice to have a great celebration of the work of our members. Speaking of congratulations, I hope our Illinois Marathon participants are recovered, and felt the love from the community and volunteers. You all are very inspiring! Lastly, congratulations to anyone graduating or with family members graduating--you did it! And for the rest of us, we’ve almost made it to summer! Don’t forget to pick up your flowers from our Philanthropy committee to celebrate!
With the upcoming reprieve of excitement and hustle and bustle, I hope you will join us for our May business meeting. Because we won’t have a large agenda, I will be hosting a speed networking event. This will be an opportunity, like speed dating, to sit with a fellow member and get to know them a bit better before moving on and meeting someone else. I’m looking forward to seeing you and hope you enjoy graduation weekend!

The committee thanks everyone who made this a special event!
Respectfully submitted by James McGraw on behalf of Erica Hanson, and Kate Day.

Urbana-Champaign is recovering from a fantastic weekend of racing. I asked for your story about the race weekend. Laura Ketchum had this to say about her experience.
I will be running/walking the 5K on Friday, April 26th. The 5K has become a mother/son tradition for me and my youngest son (8 years old). Because he is so much faster than I am, he darts along the course in half mile intervals and cheers on the other participants as he waits for me to catch up!
Our favorite part is always watching for our family along the route with their crazy posters. “Ketchum- if you can!” “Run like your brother is chasing you!” “Fun faster, we want to go eat dinner!”
Thanks Laura for sharing! Next question for the month...
What are you listening to in your workspace or are you able to listen to anything? I am usually listening to either a history podcast or Pandora music (Celtic music or Pop Fitness Radio). It all depends on what type of work I am doing and everything is on low so no one has to hear. It is your turn to share, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.

IAP Branded Lunch Bags and Clear Backpacks
The IAP branded lunch bags and clear backpacks are excellent gift ideas for Administrative Professionals Day. Not only do they promote a long-standing organization for administrative professionals, but they are also highly functional. The clear backpacks meet the new security requirements at State Farm Center, Memorial Stadium and other large venues while the lunch bags can hold a variety of items in its zippered pouch. Each are available for $10.00 each by contacting Andréa Fain (firstname.lastname@example.org) or another IAP Board member.
Testimonials from others purchasing the bags:
‘I purchased both the clear bag and the lunch bag for the 70th anniversary fundraiser. The clear bag was a gift for a friend, but I kept the lunch bag and I love using it. I bring it to work almost every day. It is just the right size for the tall thermos that I like to travel with and has a pocket on the front for notes. I would recommend as a great lunch carrier.’ - James McGraw, Administrative Aide, Beckman Institute
‘My new clear bag was perfect for the recent Jeff Dunham show. I made it right through the door and they didn’t even stop me to look in it.’ - Stacy Walker, Administrative Assistant, NCSA
