Heather Holmes with camper

You never know when that “aha!” moment will strike. It came to Heather Holmes, a senior in molecular and cellular biology, as she worked at a summer camp for people with special needs.

The connections she forged with campers were unlike any other. She learned how a little girl relayed her pain by the way she talked to her doll. She carried campers on her back in the pool. She learned a lesson in compassion that changed her life.

Heather plans to be a physician assistant. She realizes the power of her scholarships, which allowed her to work at the camp without worrying about making money. It meant that she found her calling. It means that someday, someone will fall under the care of a certain physician assistant who feels her responsibility to the core.

Read Heather’s story and learn more about how scholarships give students like her the freedom to find what they’re meant to be.

  All together. Amazing.

For more than 100 years, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has been the beating heart of the University of Illinois, providing students with an education that’s as focused as it is diverse. We’re making groundbreaking discoveries in the lab, using literature and languages to understand and interpret historical and current events and peoples, and developing an understanding of society and individuals. Working together, our people, programs, and facilities make the College of LAS altogether amazing.
