Recently, more than 100 faculty received the exciting news that they would be promoted to either associate or full professor. For Grace Gao, her promotion came with an additional achievement. CSL Professor Kesh Kesadavas and his team at the Health Care Engineering Systems Center built a mixed reality platform for the Champaign County Health Department as a way to train temporary food vendors. Previously, potential vendors would come to the county, watch a powerpoint, pass a test, and get a license. With mixed reality, the vendors can actually test their skills in real time.

One of the latest cyber threats involves hackers encrypting user files and then charging “ransom” to get them back. In the paper, “Project Almanac: A Time-Traveling Solid State Drive,” CSL students Chance Coats and Xiaohao Wang and Assistant Professor Jian Huang look at how they can use the commodity storage devices already in a computer, to save the files without having to pay the ransom. Congratulations to Marie-Pierre Lassiva-Moulin for winning the 2019 CSL Academic Professional Award! Marie-Pierre was nominated by more than a dozen people for her hard work and dedication to CSL, its faculty, and students. She specifically works with Professor Wen-Mei's IMPACT research group and has made a difference in numerous students' CSL experience.
