Ciafone’s history of Coca-Cola also tells larger story of globalization
The Coke you drink with your hot dog this summer may seem a simple, sugary, all-American beverage, but the history behind it is complex and global. It’s a history that goes back a century and a history of early innovation in practices now common in the global economy—image-making and outsourcing among them, says Amanda Ciafone, assistant professor in the Department of Media & Cinema Studies and the author of the new book Counter-Cola: A Multinational History of the Global Corporation.
Journalism alumna Wine-Banks receives 2019 Chicago Illini of the Year award
When she received her Chicago Illini of the Year award on May 22, alumna Jill Wine-Banks (BS ’64, journalism) donned a “With Illinois” Block I pin, a tradition with its own hashtag: #JillsPin. Her pins typically have political significance that comment on the day’s events, which she posts online in advance of her appearances on MSNBC as a legal analyst.
