Save the Dates: NCSA Industry Conference and Inaugural Illinois Center for Digital Agriculture Industry Conference
Mark your calendars for the Annual NCSA Industry Conference on October 9-10, 2019!
New this year, we invite you to join us two days early for the Inaugural Illinois Center for Digital Agriculture Industry Conference on October 7-8, 2019 at NCSA. The conference will open with an evening reception on October 7, followed by a day of sharing from digital agriculture academic leaders, industry leaders, and amazing students in digital agriculture. A joint reception with the NCSA Industry Conference opening will conclude the day. More details coming soon.
The Illinois Center for Digital Agriculture Industry Conference is ideal for members of the industrial and academic digital agriculture community. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about ongoing research directions and partnerships opportunities with industry, academia, and government labs and network with other industry professionals, Illinois researchers, and students.
If you are unable to attend the Digital Agriculture Industry Conference but would like to stay up to date with their latest developments, you can join the Digital Ag email membership list here: https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/6953219.
Please stay tuned as registration information for these two events will be emailed in the coming weeks.
Collaborative Efforts Produce Clinical Workflows for Fast, Translational Genetic Analysis
With individualized medicine – one of the holy grails of modern healthcare – diagnosis and treatment of patients would rely in part on each individual’s specific DNA profile, enabling truly personalized care. But in order for genetic information to contribute meaningfully to patient care, DNA testing has to be affordable and efficient. In 2017, the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine (CIM) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign embarked on a two-year Grand Challenge under the auspices of the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance for Technology-Based Healthcare with the goal of making DNA analysis a possibility for every patient. With help from NCSA Industry's Genomics team, the project is working to find the fastest tools for genetic variant calling to enable faster clinical testing.

NCSA Industry Takes to the International Stage
Industry Director Brendan McGinty and Industry Technical Director Seid Koric gave a talk entitled "Syngeries of AI/ML and HPC in Industry" at the ISC High Performance 2019 conference in Frankfurt, Germany on June 18.
In addition to introducing NCSA Industry – the largest industrial HPC outreach in the world – they shared examples of recent advances in the field of data-driven discovery in terms of development and application of big data analytics and Artificial Intelligence in the various domains of industrial interest such as geospatial information systems (GIS), AI driven multiscale models in materials science and the convergence of CFD and AI in turbulence modeling.
ISC, an internationally-recognized conference for its strength in bringing together research, academic, and commercial disciplines to share knowledge in the field of high performance computing, drew a crowd of over 3,500 researchers and commercial users.
Dr. Volodymyr Kindratenko: Helping Research Reach New Heights with AI
NCSA’s Volodymyr Kindratenko’s research rests at the confluence of some of the most cutting-edge areas of computer science in recent memory. Through his work with NCSA’s Computing and Data Sciences group, Kindratenko helps researchers and industry partners alike refine the tools and applications that they use to make discoveries and gain insights with high-performance computing.
Whether it be with Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) like those in our Blue Waters supercomputer, or Field-programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), Kindratenko’s research has focused on pushing the limits of computational research, allowing high-performance computing architectures to be optimized to tackle unique and intensive challenges with great efficiency.

Student Spotlight: Antonio Abinader
Beyond our industrial and academic partners, NCSA Industry also works with students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, providing opportunities for hands-on learning and preparing them for the demands of today's workforce. We're developing student talent, like in the case of recent NCSA intern Antonio Abinader.
“The internship pairs students with world class researchers on cutting edge projects,” explains Antonio. “It gives you a chance to learn from your mentor in a one-to-one setting which is virtually impossible if you’re in a classroom. The mix between academia and industry is amazing; while I tried new techniques in my cloud project, I also had to maintain other installations to support researchers at NCSA. It helped me develop new skills but also to improve what was learned in the classroom.”
