Get Moving with our health e-tips!

Summer means it’s time for our annual health-e-tips campaign. Our health-e-tips program will run from July 15 to August 9. This year we focus on the power of physical activity. Each week participants will receive two emails (one on Mondays and one on Thursdays) chocked full of helpful information. Our tips will:

  • Present the latest research on the benefits of physical activity
  • Debunk exercise related myths
  • Highlight campus and local resources for all types of physical activity
  • Provide helpful guidance on how to get and stay active

To sign up for our Get Moving health-e-tips series contact us at wellbeing@illinois.edu

Illinois campus becoming 100 percent smoke and tobacco free in August

In August, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will become a 100 percent smoke and tobacco free campus. Smoking of any sort is currently and will still be prohibited on any campus property – inside and outside. In addition, non-smoking forms of tobacco, such as chew, orbs and strips will also be banned. The policy applies to everyone at all times.

The use of e-cigarettes, also known as vapes or Juuls, is already banned under our current policy and will remain banned under the expanded policy.

The reason for the expansion of the policy is to:

  • Create a healthy learning, living and working environment for all campus students, employees and visitors.
  • Protect the rights of all to breathe clean air. Tobacco smoke is a dangerous carcinogen, even in small amounts. Even outside. E-cigarette vapor contains similar carcinogens.

Here are some resources to learn more:

We are currently updating the smoke-free campus website to reflect the new policy and are adding more resources. Watch for upcoming changes.

Stay safe from lightning

All about lightning

Late spring and early summer in Illinois means increased risk of severe storms. For many, tornadoes come to mind first. But lightning causes more deaths in the U.S. than tornadoes, floods, or hurricanes. You may have questions about lightning such as: Can I wash dishes during a storm? Can I use my cellphone? Where should I go to seek shelter? What should I do if I am outside? Read on to learn the answers to these questions and more.

Summer campus wellness options

Campus offers a myriad of ways to stay well this summer. Here are just a few:

Student Sustainable Farm stand: Our own Sustainable Student Farm sells their produce at their farm stand on the Quad every Thursday, 11am to 4pm.

Campus Recreation: If you’ve ever considered joining Campus Recreation, summer is a great time to try it out. You can get a less expensive summer membership. Also the facilities are less crowded. Think about how nice it would feel to swim or take a deep water exercise class in the outdoor spool. Or how much fun would it be to try log rolling! These are just two of the many activities you can try.

Yoga in the Meadow: Get a dose of the healing power of nature along with a great yoga class! These sessions are located and sponsored by Allerton Center.  The classes meet Tuesday mornings from 9 – 10 am.

Weight Watchers at Bevier: The Campus’ Weight Watchers program continues through the summer. For more information contact Wanda Plawer at wplawer@illinois.edu.

For more information about these and more, check out our Campus Wellness calendar here.
