July 2019

IEL Project Coordinator Dr. Bernadette Laumann Retires

The IEL project would like to extend warm wishes to Dr. Bernadette Laumann upon her retirement from the IEL Project. Dr. Laumann contributed to Illinois early learning community throughout her career as a teacher, principal, teacher educator, and most recently as IEL project coordinator. We applaud her many contributions on the IEL project and in the early childhood community as a voice for inclusive, high-quality early learning for all children.

Summertime Is Learning Time

Our graphic tip sheets encourage caregivers to think of ways to keep children learning. Encourage families to use summer to explore outdoors like Curious Young Scientists, use everyday routines to Get Ready to Read, and balance their technology time with hands-on play. These colorful tip sheets can be posted in community spaces, handed out at events, and shared through social media. In addition to English, all graphic tip sheets are available in Spanish, Polish, Arabic, Korean, French, and Simplified Chinese.

New Parenting Video Highlights Child’s Inventiveness

IEL parenting videos are free to use during home visits, family engagement activities, and professional development programs for early care and education staff members. Our newest video, Look What This Can Do!, demonstrates how caregivers can encourage exploration by infants. In addition, the video includes examples of how the child is indicating progress toward various standards in the Illinois Early Learning Guidelines for Children Age Birth to Three Years.

Bubbles Can Be More Than Fun

Did you know the Illinois Early Learning Project is part of the Early Childhood Collective at the University of Illinois? So is the Early Intervention Clearinghouse, which also provides resources for young children and their families. Check out its tip sheet Everyday Early Intervention: Bubbles, which details how this popular summer activity is a wonderful opportunity to develop a young child's oral motor and gross motor skills, eye tracking skills, cognitive development, and vocabulary and concept development.
