Haydn Lambert

Haydn Lambert hails from a small town, but there’s never been anything small about his aspirations. He wanted a university that would give him “knowledge of my field, cultural competence, and an appreciation for complexity.” He found the University of Illinois.

One semester, Haydn, who double majored in English and political science, took a history class on the effects of incarceration in the United States. He couldn’t stop thinking about what he learned, and finding solutions for the complex challenges facing the legal system became his driving passion.

Thanks to the Wirt Family Scholarship, Haydn reduced his work hours to pursue an internship in the Champaign County Public Defender’s Office. He had a front row view of the criminal system, and Haydn decided to become a public defender and advocate for system reform.

Read Haydn’s story and learn more about how scholarships give students like him the freedom to find what they’re meant to be.

  All together. Amazing.

For more than 100 years, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has been the beating heart of the University of Illinois, providing students with an education that’s as focused as it is diverse. We’re making groundbreaking discoveries in the lab, using literature and languages to understand and interpret historical and current events and peoples, and developing an understanding of society and individuals. Working together, our people, programs, and facilities make the College of LAS altogether amazing.
