As someone familiar with the unique artistic/scholarly opportunities that Dance at Illinois provides, we are reaching out to you to help us identify strong potential MFA candidates. As you know, our program is distinguished by the presence of renowned faculty artists, opportunities for cross-disciplinary engagement in a Research 1 institution, and by the individual interests of our select graduate population.
Our program is small and intimate, providing our students significant one-on-one mentorship, full financial assistance, and valuable teaching experience. The three-year program allows our students to take risks; explore a wide variety of creative, theoretical, and professional experiences; deeply engage as teachers in both practice and dance scholarship; and to prepare themselves to (re)enter the professional field with a strong foundation and a wealth of resources. Our graduates have been extremely successful at sustaining artistic lives once they graduate. They produce works that are pushing the field forward throughout the world in major national and international venues.
We seek diversity in age, geography, training, aesthetic, and cultural contexts. The most successful candidate for our program is one who is highly motivated, curious, and ready to reach across disciplines. Many of our students minor in other departments such as Gender and Women's Studies, Cinema/Media Studies, Latinx Studies, and African American Studies. We see choreography as an agent to address the critical issues of contemporary culture and, our students are encouraged to transform themselves and the world through choreographic research.
We particularly value your suggestions and thank you for your careful consideration. Our application deadline is December 1, 2019. I look forward to hearing from you.
