What Are You Thankful For...
From the Desk of the President
Erica Hanson, President
Well, the chilly November weather is upon us! That means an opportunity to help others in the community to ensure everyone has a warm place to sleep, clothes on their backs, and food in their tummies! Our Philanthropy Committee has provided some wonderful ideas of how to give back to the community in their announcements below. Please consider giving or donating your time.
We live in a time where it seems divisiveness is at the helm, and the rudder is fighting with all its might to steady the ship. To those who are the rudder in a sea of bigotry, anger, and incivility, I am most thankful. To those who work to see the best in others and reach out to those who may be different, I am most thankful. To those who remember we are all human and find those differences between us to be compelling and meaningful, not repellent and inconsequential, I am most thankful. To those who refuse to give in to the lowest common denominator, I am most thankful. And to the members of IAP who exemplify the rudder, I am most thankful.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with those you love and don’t be afraid to say out loud, “I am thankful for YOU!”

IAP Fundraising Report
Thanks so much to those members who volunteered and worked the concession stands at the Miranda Lambert and/or Young the Giant concerts this month. Proceeds from the Miranda Lambert concert were about $1,000! Woo-hoo! We haven’t received official figures yet from the Young the Giant concert. These funds will definitely help us recruit high-quality speakers for our planned March 2020 professional development event and plan for similar events in the future.
We have one more concert this fall - MercyMe Imagine Nation Tour with Crowder and Micah Tyler on Sunday, November 10. This is a 7:00 pm concert at State Farm Center, so check-in will be at 4:30 pm. I have three volunteers so far to work that concert, so we need at least eight to make it successful. Please consider volunteering to work this concert.
The Fundraising Committee is always looking for new fundraising ideas! One we are considering for the upcoming holiday season is Texas Roadhouse Gift Cards.
- Our organization will earn 10% of all sales.
- The fundraising period (selling the gift cards) would be over a designated 2-week period.
- We would have the option to have the gift cards branded with our organizations logo and a message such as “Thank you for your support!”
Look for more information in the coming weeks.
The Philanthropy Committee exceeded last year’s mum sale by 14 plants! Country Arbors grows fantastic mums and they were certainly worth the price. We thank you for the support of this important fundraiser!
New Philanthropic Project! This year the Philanthropy Committee would like to participate in the Backpack Project 2019. This outreach program is organized by the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. www.dailybreadsoupkitchen.com
Every December they play “Santa” and provide a bit of Christmas to their guests. They give filled backpacks to the men and women who visit their facility. WE WOULD LIKE TO HELP WITH THIS. All backpack items need to be new and labeled with gender and size. (Most guests request at least a size large and many XL, 2XL and 3XL.) They are not doing children backpacks this year. Please join us in helping out by bringing suggested items to the November luncheon.
Cold weather items (hats, scarves, gloves, socks, sweatshirts, long underwear, and regular underwear)
Decks of cards
Small fleece blankets
Candy, Gum and small food items
The Philanthropy Committee will also be adopting a family for the Holiday. Information about our family will be shared with us soon. In the meantime, as you shop for the holiday and especially Black Friday, pick up an extra this or that! A family can always use it! IAP has been a great supporter of this project and we’ve blessed many families over the past several years thanks to the generosity of our members.
In February the Philanthropy Committee we will be hosting a Mini Philanthropic Expo. Stay tuned to future newsletters for more information.
The Gift of Time...Sometimes One of the Most Treasured
On Wednesday, December 18th and Thursday, December 19th we have a wonderful opportunity to volunteer our assistance at The Salvation Army Toy Shop. Join other Illinois Administrative Professional members as we assist with various tasks from restocking tables with toys, sorting toys in the receiving area, assisting recipients/clients as they pass through the Toy Shop, and restock & cleanup/prep for the next day. Our volunteer hours are from 1:00pm until 4:30pm (approx.) on Wed the 18th and from 12:30pm to 4:30pm (approx.) on Thu the 19th. Your assistance any portion of the afternoon or the entire afternoon is greatly appreciated. Please contact Jill Odom at email@example.com or 333-8065 if you are interested or need additional information.
Another opportunity to volunteer is at the Angel Tree at Market Place Mall. The Angel Tree is in need of volunteers to work 1hr, 2hr, 4hr... any time slot beginning Friday, November 29th through Saturday, December 14th. Volunteers will need to sign up in advance and commit to attending to the booth. Children are permitted to assist but an adult must be present the entire time period. Please contact Judy Norwood at 217-778-2947 if you are interested or need additional information for yourself or a particular group.
