Friday's First-at-LAS event

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

LCLC was delighted to celebrate National First-Generation Student Day by hosting the First-at-LAS Program Launch and Celebration. This new program, led by Rosilie Hernández, Associate Dean for Student Academic Affairs, aims to create a community of UIC students.  Dean Astrida Tantillo welcomed the big crowd with her own story of being the children of refugees; many UIC students, staff, and faculty also shared their stories of being the first in the family to attend college.  Find out more here: First-at LAS Website.

Many of our LCLC Language Peer Tutors are also First-at-LAS students, so they are a great resource for your BLP students.  Please send them to lclc.uic.edu for the schedule for peer tutoring in French, German, Italian, and Spanish 101

BIG NEWS:  We're now accepting applications for the Spring 2020 Peer Tutoring Apprenticeship class: students who have passed 104 or *higher* in French, German, Italian, or Spanish can apply with a very short form here: Spring 2020 Peer Tutor Application —or email Dr. Weber: edweber@uic.edu.  If you are an instructor with questions about the program, please contact her as well. Our apprenticeship class feeds our paid tutors/tutoring internships, so the more the merrier.

TECH QUESTION for this semester or next?  Contact us at lclc@uic.edu.  If you'd like us to help you think about where tech would fit in your syllabus for SPRING 2020, we're ready!  :  )

Our workshop this week is: Annotation and drawing features in Adobe Reader —if that interests you but you can't make it at that time, email us at lclc@uic.edu to set up another time.

Weekly Workshop: Annotation and drawing features in Adobe Reader.
While Adobe Acrobat Pro offers a ton of features for creating and editing your pdf files, the free reader you can find on most home and office computers includes several useful but lesser-known features as well! In addition to basic highlight and sticky-note functions, you can underline, cross out, make collapsible text comments, and use different colors for all of the above to take your reading and analysis to a new level. In addition, a robust yet simple array of drawing tools similar to those in MS paint can work wonders with oddly scanned or poor-quality document files that are difficult to annotate with the basic tools—using those will allow you to underline and draw on slanted, blurry text with ease! Once you familiarize yourself with these tools, you can annotate and improve your research documents, literary texts, and teaching materials like a pro, all using a free and nearly universal desktop application! Stop by GH 301 at the times indicated to learn more!

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu
